What do you use this for?

Found this in a garage I cleaned out for a woman my parents know.  Guy was an office worker so have no idea where he picked this up or what it is used for.   Longer than a standard caulking tube but same diameter.  Possibly a roofing tool?

That is an ancient caulking gun.  Screw off the tip and drop the tube in.  The plunger on the back end is easily turned to remove pressure on the tube when you want it to stop pushing out the gooo.  I love these so much better than the newer ones.  Once you use one, you'll love that you can simply twist the plunger to relieve the pressure.  But, you have to remember to twist it back so that the rack gear engages.

I went and checked.  Using a Modern caulk tube I found the plunger seats to the outside walls of the cylinder tightly.  So it will not press the bottom of the tube, just crush it.  The inside of the tube smells like lacquer thinner, like someone cleaned something out of it, possibly roofing tar.

Back about 40 years ago, you could purchase a roofing goo in a caulking tube.  It worked really well around chimneys and vent stacks.  Now, they have something that is almost clear and it is siliconized.

If you wish to use this like a caulk gun that fits the newer stuff, remove the tip, the plunger plate pokes above the tube and you can resize the plunger plate to fit into the newer tubes.  I guess that it the reason I got rid of mine.  That I had forgotten.  A vice and file should take a hour or so but it will work.

These sausages are sold with a caulking gun for application.

Thanks for the help guys.  The name is rather odd, Sausage Caulking Grease Gun?  And it takes Roof Dope?  :JawDrop:

I may do just that.  Will think on it awhile.  Now that I know what it is anyway.
