This is one of those jobs I kept putting off because I "didn't have time". Turns out that wasn't really the reason () it's just that I hate doing such things. My wife has 2 teak rocking chairs that have mostly sat outside. The factory finish was totally the wrong one to start, but outside life and general neglect on my part made things worse. So I've sanded these back over the last couple of days while I could work outside (weather has been quite nice last week) and got them to this point. The seat on the right is what I started with, and on the left is what I call "good to go". These will be painted this time instead of the clear coat they had. I can't get the staining out so got the crud off as best I could and will prime them with an oil based primer, then top coat with a good exterior paint. Problem is, I have the primer but not the top coat paint. So I'm again stopped until I can go get the paint. But at least the wood is still in good shape, and while I've had a Fein Multi master for a long time....it had only been used for cutting and trimming things until now. I used it for sanding for the first time and found it useful for getting into some tight spots. Most of the remaining sanding was just done with an ROS (and lots of discs).

That cleaned up pretty good Fred.  I have a similar project (waiting until I had "the time").  I haven't gotten to the painting part yet, but working on it.  Like you, I will be able to get the primer on and then it will have to sit for awhile...

Fred, that is character to the unit.  When you get some varnish on that, it will look very good.

Thanks, Keith, for the information about Sherwin Williams.

Whether you paint it or just clear coat it with something it will be a big improvement.

OUCH ! It would really be a shame to paint teak ! Just thinking in print.

It's work but worth it in the end. I paint walnut. I don't even think about it. Its just wood.

Keith, thanks for that. I was actually wondering if any f the paint stores had considered doing it. Others, as for clear coat any of them will require a repeat of the process over time while paint would be so much more durable. Even so, I have to check with the customer (LOML) and see what she says. If I wind up clear coating it will be with an untinted oil based paint.

Might be a job for clear paint?  Best of both worlds maybe?  I've not done it myself, but it is on my bucket list when I get back into some outside projects.

Yeah, maybe. That was the uninted paint reference I made. I've used it quite a bit in the past, but the brand I used to use (Olympic) isn't available in poil based versions anymore.

Yeah, everyone seems to be cutting back on oil-based finishes.  There are a few (maybe a dozen) states with Low VOC requirements, then again the Republic of California.   I don't think they want to be making several versions of everything.  A number of years ago, the hardware store down the street from my old house was carrying Cabot 8000 series (non-poly) varnish.   They told me that they were getting in the low VOC versions then, but could continue to sell the original ones until it was gone.  I tried to buy a gallon of Waterlox and no one carried it.  I contacted the mfr (in Cleveland) and they told me they couldn't sell or ship it to me in Ohio.   I briefly considered driving the 20 miles to Kentucky where I could get it.

I prefer oil based over water myself.  Use regular poly for any shop related project.  Stuff for the house I use other better finishes but not water based.  Just like it better.

The only water based stuff I use is Kool Aid, Jello, coffee and ice.

Well, the boss wasn't sure whether to paint them or clear coat them, you couldn't envision what they would look like clear coats. So, off to SW where I got a qt. of their SWP oil based exterior ultradeep color base. This stuff looks like french vanilla whipped cream when you open the can, but dries quite clear. So I'll show Marie what it will look like and go from there. I'll add that my SW store did have curbside delivery, but you had to call ahead so they can mix (if needed) and shake your paint. Then you pull up in front of the store and call them to bring it out. No cash payments, they take your credit card process the charge (you can do that when you order if you want) and bring you the receipt (and your card).

BTW Keith, thanks for letting me know about the curbside stuff...I would have still been waiting for the crisis to end had you not mentioned it.

I'm doing what I can, looking out the window watching it snow.<_<

OK, got the clear direction from the boss..they are to be painted a medium gray. She doesn't appreciate the look of the grain once clear coated. Actually, I thought it came out really nice. Oh, well. Back to SW tomorrow after I call in my paint order.
