Old TS blades, alignment disk, sanding disk

Featured Replies

So being awake at 2:30 am this morning my brain was in overdrive. So I was brainstorming the following:

The Victim: I have several OLD 10" NON carbide ts blades, both rip & crosscut.

The thought: Grind off the set of the teeth to make a flat platter from which I could:
1) make a measuring/set up / alignment disk
2) glue on sandpaper and make a sanding disk.

The procedure:
1) put it flat on the bench & hand grind the set of the teeth off. The problem I see with this approach is making a relatively flat & true rim due to human error & body movement. And the sparks flying around in the shop.  :frown:

Or

2) mount the blade backward into my spare TS (mostly made of metal--not plastic). Use either a diamond sharpening stone or an old file to grind off the teeth while running the saw with a zero clearance insert. The stone could be mounted to the table saw fence, sandwiched into a split auxiliary fence. Or I could mount a file on a piece of wood and use the fence as a guide to more accurately grind off the teeth.
I could move the saw to the driveway and let the sparks fly outside--safely??Relatively.

So which blade should I use? The rip blade would have a wider kerf which would necessitate more grinding thus generating more heat potentially warping the blade or use a crosscut blade with less offset but more teeth. Using the crosscut, I think,  would be quicker resulting in less heat.

So, I'm open to all your thoughts & comments regarding the whole brainstorm.

I think I'd use a combination of both methods. Hand grind/cut the teeth than use the blade mounted method for finish.

If you have a bench grinder, maybe you could make something similar to a bandsaw circle cutting jig and use it to finish off the blade rather than putting it in the tablesaw.

Why not just use a steel sanding disk?

Exactly Gene, sounds like a lot of work for not much gain.

Also, I would recommend you put a straightedge across the blade, avoiding the teeth of course, and make sure the blade is still flat enough for your purposes.

Do you know anyone who has a lazer cutter? Definitely would be much faster and easier? Maybe a local welding shop.

NAY-- that's the wife's routine, and STILL stays up to 2 or 3 am. When she comes to bed the movement wakes me up. So with her & with my bladder my night consists of 2 hour naps. And people wonder why I'm grumpy and anti-social!!!

Sharpen the savable ones.

The others would make good sacrificial anodes for doing electrolysis cleaning of old tools.
