March 6, 20206 yr Popular Post Ok...that Stanley No.71-1/2 Router plane had 2 cutters...a 1/2" wide one that came with it, and a 3/8" wide one I made....there was an issues with the 3/8" cutter.. It was a little too long, needed to cut about where the red lines are, and re-sharpen the edge. While I was at it... Dug out an old allen wrench. After pricing a new 1/4" cutter...ouch...decided I could try to cobble up one myself (Not that I am cheap, or anything,,,just Frugal) Needed two extra items in the shop...a glass of water, and a pair of Visegrips... To keep the steel cool, AND my fingers.....Grind & Dunk....check the fit...Grind & Dunk some more... notch was made with the dremel cutting wheel....then a start on sharpening a cutter... Most of the grinding was to turn that hex shaft into a square shaft....and lined up with the cutting edge....as this fits back into w v groove on the plane... was finally able to try a test drive....knife two lines across a board,, backsaw the lines a bit deeper..then use the plane to remove between the lines...seems to work. next...needed a place to store one more cutter.. Left the 1/4" in the plane, and the improved 3/8" and the OEM 1/2" into storage holes....since I grab the plane out of the box by the adjuster wheel, I am safer from sharp edges..Just hope the lid closes.. Works for me. Plane itself was made sometime after 1911.....A Type 4. Had one other issue...when I varnished this box last night...the lid wound up getting stuck closed...Had to pop that open. That should do for cutters, for a while.... (not that I am cheap, or anything..just Frugal )
