Hut finish, not so long lasting

Featured Replies

I am posting this on the lathe forum because this finish is only for turning/finishing. I have turned many small things and my favorite finish was Hut Crystal coat. Easily applied and brings out a wonderful shine. It is applied to the piece while it is turning, dries and shines.

Fast forward 3 years. The pieces I turned and finished with Hut are now dull, very dull.  I'm wondering if that is the natural process or did I misuse it........too much polishing removed the finish?  Meanwhile.......The pieces I finished with clear lacquer are still very shiny.

Anyone else use Hut and what are your results?

According to the MSDS, it contains "shellac and natural waxes" along with a lot of solvent.   I think it's just a very thin finish that needs refreshing.  If you want a glossy finish you can add more shellac or if you want a more matte finish some wax and buffing.

I wipe my turned stuff down with car was to keep it shiny.

I had some that I used on pens I made. It did not stay shiny very long. Ended up giving it to a turner friend. Not sure what he used it on.

Thanks Lew, if it happened to you, I feel confident that I didn't misuse it.

For pens I would stick with Shella Wax, but for other stuff lacquer and on stuff I use in a place where water is around a lot I have used oil based polyurethane.  Spray or brush they all look good, and no worries with getting wet sometimes.

I used Helmsman Urethane for this project.
