December 7, 20196 yr Popular Post Let's face it, while we like to think we have the memory of an elephant the reality is, no we can't. I'm not talking about the selective memory we have when asked to take out the garbage for the 46th time this week. We all have stuff in the shop, and lots of it. As a auto mechanic I have a rather large tool box, boxes really, and I use them daily. Some many times a day others rarely. And to keep where they are straight I don't like moved to another drawer, or even buying a new box and rearranging where everything goes. Slows me down and time is money. Now at home I am not worried about the time is money deal. But I would like to spend less time looking through drawers for something and more time actually making stuff. For many years I have labeled some drawers but nothing serious. No more, in between projects for the moment I decided the time has come to label stuff, like everything. My neighbor jokes with me about being a "mini home depot". Seems he wasn't too far off the mark. Took me quite awhile to organize all those screws, nuts and bolts and while doing so I am wondering how did amass such a collection? Never mind all the tools. Two nights progress: Don't worry, I have plenty of tape.
December 7, 20196 yr Popular Post I've been threatening myself to do something like that ever since I built the miter saw station. Those 16 - 28" deep drawers hold a mess of stuff and it seems I've moved that stuff around a few times and never remember just where so I do the hide and seek thing that really tests my patience. Did I mention my patience seems thin at times like my memory? I decided to go a more aesthetic route and try to find some large drawer label frames like those used on the old library reference files but no joy so far. That way when I move the stuff again I can move the label simply by lifting the printed card out of the frame. I like the idea but haven't been able to locate these drawer label frames just yet. But you're way ahead of me as is.
December 7, 20196 yr The designer I I'm working with has a huge selection of metal work boxes with tape on every drawer. I stand back and gaze and think about the time waste looking and reading the to find out which drawer has what and which one has over flowed and now is in the wrong drawer. Much simpler when it in the open in front of you. I can't take away credit from each of you that have a nice setup but I found over time I just want to reach and grab the things I want. Most of my stuff is either buried under stuff or behind something in those 24" shelves.... Darn.... where's my easy button...

I see your point on the having to look things over, especially if you are new to the shop. Over the years as I have changed jobs this is frustrating to get work done until you learn the lay of the land. Now I did use up a lot of time organizing the screws, nut and bolts but this pays off later. I have had to make a habit of purging stuff that hasn't been used in a long time so I don't start a junkyard.
December 7, 20196 yr sreilly24590 you might check with www.dlawlesshardware.com for the drawer labels holders. I was just on that site and there are some good prices with lots of types to choose from., decent prices on their drawer pulls also.

I'll sort the expensive screws out and trash the rest. There's a hardware store down the street organized and stocked when I need them...
December 7, 20196 yr Now I am looking for some surgical hand held pin nails maybe 3/4. If you see or hear a Link let me know....
December 7, 20196 yr Old Artillery poem: "...a battery seen is a battery lost". Tools: a tool unseen is a tool lost. I shudder to think how many repetitive purchases of things buried on a shelf I have wasted.
