DeWalt Planer knives replacement

Featured Replies

I'm looking at buying a replacement set of knives for my DW734 planer.  Currently, I have DeWalt knifes installed.  On the 1st use, I planed hard maple and now I have a few chips.  Are the Infinity Replacement knives superior to the OEM knives?  OEM are $53.33 @ HD.  The Infinity knives are $74.90.  Danl

I have the 735 and have always used the OEM knives. I've heard of guys sharpening them but never tried that.  Mostly I plane oak, walnut and cherry but have done hard maple for my rolling pins. Every now and then I'll get some tear out on wild grain but attributed that to the grain more than the sharpness of the knives.

When I bought the planer, from Woodcraft, they cautioned me not to be really aggressive with the cuts. I usually do between 1/3 to 1/2 turn of the adjustment wheel- depending on the wood species and the width of the boards.

I have an older 733 and have used the OEM knives and get what I think is good use before I buy more. I would think the other brand if they are not carbide would be about the same metal as the Dewalt brand.

I did buy the sharpening machine Grizzly sells but I tried it a few times but end up buying new. I now have 4 old sets but the machine was bought in about 2000 so I'm happy.

I was looking for a new planer and came across this website.  https://www.zaloray.com

Did some basic checks and the website is only 3 months old.  Looking at the prices I was rather skeptical it was legit.

Anyone else ever seen these people?  A $500 planer for $67 and free shipping seemed way off.

If you buy two, do they throw in the bridge? :)

Infinity sells some very good stuff, but as a rule really good aftermarket knives are generally (seems to me) less expensive than the OEM. A brand I can recommend are labeled Titan, and i got mine from Holbren. They lasted much longer then the OEM on my Delta planer and cost quite a bit less.

If you often plane figured wood with your Dewalt 735, if you tire of shifting/ flipping blades, if your ears are assaulted by planer noise, if you plane a lot, if you have an extra $500, contact Holbren and order their Byrd Shelix head. I calculated the cost of OEM blades and found the Shelix will pay for itself in about 3 years, based on the number of OEMs I've bought since owning the 735. Wish I'd done it years ago.

Stubby Nubs endorses "MywoodCutters.com.   Thank you everyone for your feedback   Danl

If Stumpy endorses something, you can be sure he's tested it/used it. I coulda saved $80 if he could have made his endorsement earlier. I note that they don't offer the under sized head. That's a good thing. The extra work to insert the OEM size is definitely worth doing.
