November 19, 20196 yr Popular Post I was just looking through the current issue of the AARP magazine and came across this (no way I know of to link you to the article). A WWII vet who was an "elite" tank gunner was happy to get out of the Army. While serving he destroyed 5 German tanks (I guess that's the "elite" part) and in recent years he had been wishing for one more ride in an M4 Sherman Tank. He was quoted as saying to a friend "It's more than a machine, I owe my life to that tank". So Clarence Smoyer's friend planned a surprise. Clarence heard some rumbling outside his house and opened the door to see what it was. More than 100 of his friends/family/neighbors were outside, and there was an M4 Sherman idling in front of his house . They had rented it for his one last ride (as an aside, who knew you could rent these things; let alone drive them on a public street). Anyway, the fanfare included a Police Honor Guard and firefighters to help the 96 year old onto the tank. He got his wish, and was also rewarded a Bronze star with V device. His exploits were detailed in a book, which I guess led to the reward. This all happened in Allentown, PA. Anyway, I thought it was a neat story.
November 19, 20196 yr Popular Post A neat story, indeed. Glad that old warrior got his wish and, that it was delivered so honorably. And very glad he received his Bronze Star. Sounds like he deserved it. thanks for sharing the story, Fred.
November 19, 20196 yr Popular Post Great story. Well deserved party and award. 96 years is an achievement in itself.
