Air Fiiltration

Featured Replies

Ok so I have decided that I want to add some air filtration to my garage workshop. Right now the budget is pretty tight so
I have been looking for a used system or a really good deal.

I have only found one used unit and it is a Delta 50-868 and just needs a filter for $75 (I think I can get it cheaper because it needs filters).

I have also found that Amazon has the WEN 3410 @ $126.38.

Questions

What is your opinion on these units?

Is it worth the hassle buying the used one and get new filters or should I just buy the new one and call it a day?

Check out Craigslist or your local auction listings.  I bought my Jet at auction for a little over $100.

I have the WEN. Got it thru Walmart "to store" delivery so there was no shipping. It's really quiet and I like the remote control option. The only down side is that it takes unusual sized filters so you can't sub a typical furnace pleated filter. The filters are available from WEN

I have a JDS that I bought when they first came out.

I've also made one from a salvaged furnace fan blower, some plywood in a box around it, and a couple of furnace filters.   It lacks the internal filters but better than nothing and only cost me some scrap plywood.  It sits right now in my finish area and I let it run after I turn off the spray booth filter fan.  It is a two-speed fan so I got a switch that runs high, low, and off.

Great idea!

I have this one, works well, I date the filters and try to stay on monthly blow outs of the outer filter.  Inner has yet to be changed, but I have a box of extra filters for them as well.  I change the filter out on 3 month intervals.  Longer if I haven't done much shop work.

I have a old JDS one speed. It works but not the best there is. Also have a 3 speed Jet with three timer settings and It really puts out a breeze. The bag has been blown out after 2 being up two or three years but is in good shape. I started last year buying MERV 12 filters for both and they both use the same size.

The shop built units can be very effective and low cost. You will need a blower from a furnace, if you know anyone in the business you might be able to get one form them. I kept the one from my old furnace when I had it replaced. But put it in a plywood box, and then use furnace filters to clean the air. On the one I built I used 3, stacked sequentially. The last one was a Filtrete Ultra Allergen, catches the finest stuff. In front of that was a Fitrete Purple (not quite as tight) and in front  of that one was a cheaper filter to catch the larger particles...this kept the more expensive ones in service longer. I suppose you could, as an alternative, bui;d the box to accommodate one of the commercially available sock filters like the purchased units use.

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish.  The problem with typical air cleaners (of the size you mention) is that they turn out about 400 cfm air.  In a 25x20x8 space, that's an air turnover every 10 minutes (and "real" capture of about twice that time, 20 minutes).  If you want overall, slow, dust reduction, one of these running continuously will clear the room.  OTOH, so will just waiting for the dust to drop to the floor.  For overall dust clearance, I open the garage door, and I put a wall fan on a bracket that hangs from the ceiling at the closed end of the garage.  I position my dust-making operation about 5--8' from the fan (in the direction of the open door); dust is blown away from me and eventually just precipitates out on the floor/driveway.  That's the best cost/benefit arrangement you can get, but it is not going to work in Minneapolis (or, locally, ShowLow: internationally famous for inclement winter weather.  sort of).  I know the room air filters are popular, and they do eventually capture dust, but you're going to breathe in a lot of it before it gets to the filter.  When choosing filters, pick one that is at least "merv 13" (cheap ones are merv 8 or unrated).  The best (and yes most expensive) method is capture right at the tool before it gets in the air.

As mentioned on the other sites. $75 is a good price, but look at the inner filter. If its bad its not cheap.. Outer  filter is nothing..

These work very good.....

I am going to go look at the Delta this afternoon, I really think that I can pick it up for less then the $75 asking price.

It is a good price, grab it and get it installed.  Buy a extra filter and you are good for awhile.  I was about to build my own when a friend gave me the WEN as a Christmas gift.  Only expense I had was to buy 3 boxes of filters.

They definetly work . I keep mine above the work bench. When I was sanding doors for cabinets I could see in the sunlight coming through the window just how much it worked. Just don't let the second filter get over clogged

I went and looked at the Delta Air cleaner today and it was in really nice condition, very clean and sounded great.  I was able to pick it up for $60.  I am going to replace both the inner and outer filters. Hopefully I will get it hung up in the next couple days while I am waiting for the inner filter to come in.

If you look on the back wall in the picture you can see the conduit comes down to a switch I use to turn it on. Very easy to set up

Pictures....

Quick update:  The inner filter need replacing so I have ordered then from Wynn Environmental, they had a 2 pack for $69.  They should be in late this week early next week.  Will post update when I get it hung.

FYI: Wynn Environmental offers a military discount of 15%.  All orders have to be done over the phone to get discount.

Sounds good....
