November 2, 20196 yr Popular Post Made a find at estate sale. A machinist chest. It has a removable front that also can act as a small shelf. One drawer was full of Starrett calipers a credential wrench all greased and wrapped in that wax paper . Another drawer has a Starrett multi angle head in miniature but no rule. Also a folding Metal Lufkin rule. snow a question cleantools or sell in pristine condition? Some tools are marked Union Tool.
November 3, 20196 yr Quite the haul Gerald. Around here anything Starret seems to command a high price. I think they will show well in either condition. Without the boxes, cleaning them may be best unless you know they are new unused. Anyone can grease them and wrap them in wax paper.

Internet search shows the protractor, center finder & 12" rule combo @ close to $300.00. If your thinking of selling, I would be interested in the depth gauge next to the center finder & a small set of dividers.

Yes there are items I will never use and will post pictures when I get it cleaned. Dan I am thinking maybe not used much but the grease on it is dried out so you my be right on someone packing it that way
November 4, 20196 yr There was another site I read recently, something like 15 expensive tools that are worth it. Starrett had a couple of entries and a lot of people commented there were now competitive tools that were much cheaper and just as good and accurate. I was planning on building a Gerstner-clone mechanics chest in the near future, but with my new workbench, clearing out some of the things from my previous storage drawers, I find I now (currently) have plenty of room. So back burner that. I went to a Gerstner open house a couple of years ago. They are about 40 minutes away now. They had some nice looking combo-squares that the manufacturer's name was ground off. So obviously factory seconds. While cheap, it was a bit leery. The definition of a square that is not square is a door stop. I was also a bit disappointed with the current Gerstner offering. They have a domestic and an import version. The domestic is now mostly plywood and the imported is solid wood but no attempt is made to ensure grain match or even all quarter-sawn material on the drawer fronts. So I passed.
November 5, 20196 yr Author The surprise is that all the tools are not Starrett. There are two Craftsman, A Brownie micrometer and Brown & Sharpe one also. The folding rule only has made in Germany on it, the smallest rule is Starrett and the 6 inch is Lufkin with advertising on the back. These are not new except the combo head. I see some use on most. The thread measuring tool is also Starrett. Now the question there is a small corner square tool with a double sided chanell for a rule and a single side one also, does anyone know what it is? That small angle tool is also Starrett. Edited November 5, 20196 yr by Gerald

November 14, 20196 yr I bought a Waterloo tool box about 15 years ago from a fellow cabinet maker who went to machinist school but didn't finish. I think I gave him $150 with many Starrett still in the box or leather holder... they just sit there as I don't know what to do with them...
