October 31, 20196 yr Popular Post comment_207029 As promised, this is the thread of small project for neighbor widow. Bless her heart, she tried and it gave me the privilege to share some tips with her. She glued the boards together without any support. it was too easy to pull the cripple off her board. She told me that these are going above her head above her bed. She shouldn't have a rude awakening. This is a process for beginners, not for the seasoned ones. But, you are welcome criticize or comment about anything in this process. Before sanding, you can see the glue and wood tearing. Edited October 31, 20196 yr by FlGatorwood pictures out of sequence. October 31, 20196 yr Author Popular Post comment_207030 This picture is how I sanded the glue off and smoothed the wood. Quick and painless. Notice that the fence is slightly skewed so the wood is tighter at the back of the disk. I should have set it for the front as the wheel is pulling the stock downward at the front. Now I will show you a unique adjustment. You can advance the sanding disk to the work by 1/16" inch per pass. Sanding sufficient. Edited October 31, 20196 yr by FlGatorwood Report
October 31, 20196 yr Author Popular Post comment_207032 Time to cut dadoes. Can't find my dadoe blades. So will do it the old fashioned way. Cut on each side of the intented dadoe and chew out the center. Please notice the block of wood clamped to the fence. You do not wish to have the stock pressed against the fence while cutting unless you just really enjoy having stock tossed back in your face (called kickback). Most hogged out, but needs some clean up. Time to get the mallet and chisel. Edited October 31, 20196 yr by FlGatorwood Report
October 31, 20196 yr Author Popular Post comment_207036 Time for dry fit. Let's see how it looks. A couple not as tight as I like, but it will pass. After all, it's going to be covered, I just want the strength. I thought I could cheat, but as you can well see, they don't quiet have the length to apply pressure for gluing. So, we have another avenue. No problem. yep, this is better. All cripples touching. Now, after glue up, need to drill out for doweling. Edited October 31, 20196 yr by FlGatorwood Report
October 31, 20196 yr Author Popular Post comment_207039 Here is the finished product. Please don't do chin ups. I seriously doubt it would hold anyone, but I think her floating shelves are safe. I hope this is a good project and understandable for beginners. The dowels are 1/4" by 1" long. Yes, they are glued as are the cripples with Titebond III. I think they will be there when I am gone. October 31, 20196 yr comment_207068 Never got anything other than the Woodworking For Everyone book and a sheet of assembly instructions. Those Hands On videos were great, though. But, I only found them about 8-10 years ago. Who produced the tapes you have? Was Nick Engler a presenter? Report

November 1, 20196 yr Author Popular Post comment_207192 BillyJack, I would be happy to build some for you. I have another thread coming on building the shelves. Right now, running up and down the road to physical therapy and getting grandchildren to and from school. Their parents car was re-ended the other day and totaled that Honda. All seem well, but now car shopping. John and Gene, so happy that I could stir the pot a little. Remembered from the 1980's demos about taking the sanding disk to the work, so not a leap there to figure out that piece. I have done that procedure to dimension lumber that I wanted to a certain size. Also, if a piece is small and cupped, rather than use the jointer, I use this method with the sanding disk to flatten out the wood. Yes, it is thinner, but I am not that precise. Glad we had some fun. Report
