Furnace Filter Sizes

Featured Replies

I've got what I think is a major gripe about furnace filter sizes. For example my wife went down and bought 16" x 25" x 4" the same size thats printed of the old filter. She gets it home and it wouldn't because the actual size from one to the other filter is different by as much as 1/4' in just one or more the the demensions. I say, what a bunch of BS ! How about some standardized sizes folks ? It might not only save us from another trip to the store, but lesson the chances of price gouging.

Wait until it happens to you.

Our furnace came with a re useable unframed plastic mesh filter. Just take it out and rinse it off every so often. Maybe you could find one like that. Easily trimmed to fit if you can find one too large.

Interesting Gene. Brand ? Model number ?

I have only had an electronic filter and metal mesh since we moved into this house (30+ years).   Clean them as needed and re-install.   Hate paper filters.   were those made by a major company in US or somewhere else?

Charlie, it's an Intertherm furnace. Here's a link to the filter material. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017WOXA4Y/ref=psdc_13399891_t3_B000JQG19Y

My furnace has a standard filter and then there is a wire frame in the motor compartment covered with this style filter cloth.  I change the filter when needed and the motor compartment filter stays clean and lasts three to four years before needing replaced.  The furnace is a Lennox.

That material I use as a prefilter in the air filter in the shop that runs all the time while the lights are on.

In the house filter I use one made to fit inside the furnace, the same size as the regular furnace filter. It has wires in it that are spaced a certain distance apart and are coated with a material that sets up a static charge which is activated by the air flow, and collects dust and finer particles as the pass by. To clean I vac off and run it thru the dish washer, then dry it and reuse it. They cost me $35.,I bought 2, and are more cost effective than the throw away filters at $12-$20. that have to be changed every 3-6 months.
