October 22, 20196 yr comment_206098 My favorite film finish is an oil based alkyd resin varnish and these varnishes are disappearing altogether. We used to be able to buy McCloskey's Heirloom, P&L 38, Old Masters had one, and SW Fast Dry Oil Varnish. The P&L is still available, but this is none for sale in my area (very hard to find). The SW product was discontinued (I guess) although it's possible it's now sold under the Min Wax name (Min Wax Fast Dry Oil Varnish. Old Masters quit selling their version. The McCloskey's brand was bought out by Cabot, and renamed as the Cabot 8000 series varnish...it's a great product and I still have 2 quarts in my stash. But when Valspar bought out Cabot, they discontinued the 8000 series so I can't get it anymore. Anyway, sorry for the long winded story, this morning on CL was an ad for several cases of Cabot products...including a case of my beloved 8000 varnish! I just picked it up and added it to my stash. The price was certainly not a gloat ($60 for 4 quarts), but it's still cheaper than the last case I bought ($19/qt.). So I'm a happy camper. Report
October 22, 20196 yr comment_206113 Yeah, and now Sherwin-Williams bought most of Valspar (they spun off the Guardsman operation that I was involved with). S-W also owns Minwax. There are about 10 companies that own a vast majority of the finish market. I made a list once of all the brands I could think of and all fell within this list except for General Finishes. https://www.pcimag.com/articles/104924-global-top-10-and-pci-25-top-paint-and-coatings-companies When you are traveling south through Cinci, Cincinnati Color Co. is right of I-75 two blocks south of the Cincinnati Museum Center / Union Terminal. They carry a lot of stuff you don't get in the big box stores. Might be worth a try. Report
