October 9, 20196 yr Been so busy ??? Don't remember what it was I was doing but it wasn't in the shop.. Staining Then spraying some clear. This should come close to matching her new car. Trying to find some 1/2" wide painters tape but none in a few places I have looked.. I did need some 1/4" wide painters tape for a special project some time ago and had to order one roll from the internet.. The freight was more than the tape cost. This is a project with no drawings before I starter to guide me. Jut to see how much longer it would take me trying to think and saw..!!
October 10, 20196 yr Author Danl I didn't look online yet. When I needed some 1/4" wide I found it on Zoro.com I had been ordering things from them for sometime and some things are a bargain. Headed to the big city tomorrow for 2 hot water heaters...I put the last two in way back there and have been expecting leaking to start soon and for once in my life time I will change them out and not have to dry up a mess, I hope. Home Depot and Lowe's both give vets a discount if the things are in the store but HD says not if things are special ordered. .....I didn't ask Lowe's if they did or didn't on special orders. Thanks for the tip.
October 10, 20196 yr It might depend on the store but, Lowes here gives us a vet discount on special orders.

These chains throw out what you can and cannot do so often nobody can really keep them straight. You can go one place and this is a rule, go 5 miles to the next one and they have never heard of the rule. So much for modern communications marvels. They are as in the dark as they were 30 years ago.
October 10, 20196 yr The projects look good up there Jess. How much cleanup is there on the airbrush when you are done? 10 minutes, 30 minutes? A little late in the game now for your tape needs, but a couple alternatives. Most good auto supplies should carry pinstripe in various widths, some of that stuff is pretty flexible and stretchable and might serve your need. For the 1/2" tape, how much do you need, and how flexible? If you are not shaping it to a multiangled surface, you could ask at a vinyl shop, sign or t-shirt shop for them to cut a piece of vinyl at 1/2" to the length you need. Just a 1/2" stencil would be the result.
October 10, 20196 yr Author Cal the air brush is not that hard to keep clean. When I get through using it I run a little lacquer thinner to clear it out then leave it full of thinner sitting on the shelf. About three weeks ago I still had not run the thinner and it took a little extra time to get the spray to widen out like always...Plus I have been spraying that water base stain and the glitter settles so I also clear it out with lacquer thinner also... I don't know if anyone does what I do and that is mixing lacquer base stain with water base stain. I do this sometimes for certain colors and there is a problem with it mixing and the stain will get like clabber milk…. I have never let this out but to get the two to mix like it should then instead of using lacquer thinner switch over to acetone and wa la the two different base stains will mix. I doubt if the know it all paint masters know this..... When the two clabbers just add some acetone and the mixture will smooth out...my little secret.
October 10, 20196 yr Author Gene I have never checked with Lowe's here to see for I have never needed a special order through their store... The other day when I had to renew my drivers license I wanted veteran included on the card so I had to take my DD214 and show it. No big deal but that 10% adds up here and there.

Don't know if the vet designation is available in AZ. Never asked. I used to have a laminated reduced size DD 214 but it went through the wash too many times. Now, I carry a VA card that works in most places. If you get a MY LOWES account, your vet status is in their system and you get the discount automatically and a "Thank you for your service" from the nice cashier.
October 10, 20196 yr Author Here we give them our phone number and that shows the clerk we are in their records as good bad or ugly and a vet.
October 10, 20196 yr I have a "Choose VA" card and that is accepted at HD without any problem now. They were getting hammered by Lowes and deservedly so. Unfortunately, the cashiers took the brunt of it while the managers hid in their offices. Jim
October 11, 20196 yr I do not know about special orders from Lowes, but I have ordered on line stuff from them not carried in the store and do get the vet discount. Home Depot on the other hand, sometimes I get the discount, sometimes not. I recognize a few of the cashiers and know some of them that will not give the discount, I always ask when it's a new cashier. Due to this, HD is my last choice for anything. First, the local building supply - they have prices as good or better than Lowes with discount on most items, will price match if they can, and usually their product is better quality. Second, big blue. Last, HD
October 11, 20196 yr That is an interesting concept to mix the lacquer and water base stains. Had you asked me if it could be done I would have said no way, now I will have to say that I have heard it can be but I've never done it... What is the effect you get from mixing like this?

And it's not like you're taking money out of their pockets. However, there are some items that can't be discounted for a variety of reasons - JD tractors and wood pellets are two that I recall. But they should explain that. Also, when I worked there, each employee was authorized to credit up to $50 without management approval if there was some issue with an order. Jim
October 11, 20196 yr Author Cal I needed a brighter red and I decided to use printers ink yellow which is water base and when I mixed it in with a dye stain lacquer base red stain it clabbered up and looked terrible in the baby food glass jar. I then got the acetone and poured it in over the clabberd mixture and and it smoothed out and this is what I used. After the stain dries I use the all pro 3m 200 grit to sand off the edges to make it look like this is an older finish like people almost wore the paint off keeping it clean! Maybe she will use it as a hood ornament on her new red SUV. It should match the color maybe!
