Hello

We are looking to replace our existing washing machine and are looking for recommendations. Its just the 2 of us, so no heavy usage. Right now, we have scouted Maytag and Whirlpool. Online reviews may be questionable.

Thanks in advance.

We have an 8 y.o. LG front load machine that has been great. Wouldn't advise a front loader for anybody over 30, though.:OldManSmiley:

We had a GE front loader. First, it developed a terrible oder. Had to add a fan and switch to powdered detergent. After 7 years the main bearings went bad. Repair costs more than a new one. My wife never thought it got the clothes really clean. We now have a GE top loader. The wife is much happier. The repair guy said his preference was a Speed Queen as far as needing the fewest repairs

We replaced out Maytag front loader with a Samsung about 10 years ago. So far it's been fantastic. The matching dryer did have a control circuit go bad (warranty, in our case) but otherwise it's done well. I've always heard the front loaders would have odor problems, so we've always left the door open on the washer overnight after use. No idea if that's the solution...but we've not odor problems.

I bought a Whirlpool top loader a few months ago.  Deciding factor was that it has knobs and no electronic displays.  Works fine.

We have a Kenmore water saver, it doesn't have a typical agitator its only about 6" tall. Sensors can detect when the clothes are covered in water and quits filling. Blankets don't get tangled. Replaced the control board, warrantied, once in 12 years.

Last year when our maybe 8 y.o. Kenmore quit we replaced it with a top load Samsung.  No complaints so far.

Good luck getting a definitive answer hat, they are all probably good right out of the box - and none of them will last as long as the older machines did:wacko:

We also leave the door open and do this procedure every couple of months...

Cleaning a Front Load Washer:  What You'll Need:

·         2 cups vinegar

·         1/4 cup baking soda

·         1/4 cup water

·         Scrub sponge

Directions:

·         Start by mixing together the baking soda and water in a small bowl. This is going to be the "detergent" for cleaning the washing machine. Pour the vinegar into a measuring cup and head over to your washing machine.

·         Add the baking soda mixture to the detergent container of your machine and pour the vinegar into the drum. Set your washer to normal load at the hottest water setting. Close the door and start the machine, letting it do all the hard work for you. The baking soda and vinegar naturally break up mineral deposits and any mold growth while cleaning and refreshing your washing machine.

·         Use a clean scrubber to rub around the opening of the washing machine, removing stubborn mold or residue. Wipe clean with fresh water.

A good tip for any washing machine, or dishwasher.

GULP ! Just invested in a new all electronic controls  Whirlpool washer and drier about 2 months ago. The store owner is a friend  who grew up with my kids. He does recommend top loaders over front loaders, but the boss and operator of the machines wanted the front loaders . AT least it is made in the USA.

Back when there was a Handyman Club forum, we had a guy there whose handle was Scooter.  He worked on appliances professionally.  He always recommended Whirlpool.  Back in the 1990's, Whirlpool purchased Maytag, Magic Chef, Hardwick, Kitchenaid and Tappan stove manufacturers.  We have top loading basic Maytag that we purchased in 1993.  Raised 2 teenagers, almost 2 grandchildren and our own clothes.  Not one problem yet.  Better than a Timex.  We have since purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator and dishwasher.  And, yes, the more basic, the longer it will last.  We have a Kitchenaid stove that she used before getting sick.  Now, the number board is showing signs of failure and there are no replacement parts.  Yep, the newer ones won't last as long as the older ones.  A guarantee that you will have to buy another in the near future.  In the little town of Cleveland, TN, the nearest town to where I grew up, is a large plant for Whirlpool.  They make Whirlpool and Maytag appliances there and employee about 500 people.  It's so good to support some USA manufacturer.
