September 9, 20196 yr Popular Post Finished a few baby rattles I have been turning in my spare time. They are all done in Maple with the two darker rattles finished with Amber Shellac and the lighter one done with Wood Turners Finish which is a water based finish. I used BB's in one and bearing balls in two. The bearing balls make more noise. I used 12 BBs in the one and it weighs in at 1.45 oz. I used 6 bearing balls in another which weighs in at 1.50 oz. They are 2" OD on the rattle end and 4.75" long. I made an inside and outside template to strive for a 1/8" wall thickness. The center burn line hides the glue line. Critiques and comments welcome.
September 10, 20196 yr Much better than what I did. Yours won't kill the child like these that I did. As Gunny said, great job on hiding the glue line.
September 10, 20196 yr Great design and pictures thanks. I have a question is the lighter colored one's finish edible after curing? If not you may need to strip and refinish in Shellac which is edible.

September 10, 20196 yr I think we have beat that horse to death. All finishes are food safe after cure. Now as to edible that will never be certified because the manufacturers are not going to spend millions to prove that just so us home workshop guys can have something we can brag is edible finish. To go farther for a rattle which will be in childs mouth just wax and let it go. I suspect that most of the heirloom quality rattles such as this just get a picture made with the child and then are put away for posterity .
