As much as I hate to do it, I'm starting to put some tools and machinery up for sale.

Sorry to read that. Certainly understandable, though.

I try to take dust collection as a fairly serious subject, last year I contracted throat cancer and had to have my voice box removed, and my breathing has become more labored. I now not only have a dust collector with a low micron bag, but I also have a Air Filtration Unit hung from the ceiling centered in the shop. I have also spent a considerable amount of time designing and building better dust hoods and building separators, all constructed with sheet metal.

Thanks for explaining your situation completely. Do you also have to use oxygen? Sure do hope you do not have to close up the shop.

On the bag you use , if you had a canister filter you would catch more dust and have greater vacuum pressure .  On the air filter you will also get better performance if it is placed on an outside wall or near it to cause a circular flow. I have two in my shop but it is kinda large at 36 x 24.

Charlie, thank you for reminding us that we need to wear some form of dust filters and have functional dust collection systems.  Some years back, I helped a neighbor with some plantation blinds made of masonite.  I rushed and did not apply a mask or turn on a dust collector.  A few weeks later, I developed a small cough.  After a few weeks, I went to an Urgent Care who went into emergency mode.  After a few treatments, I seem fine, but learned my lesson.  Thank you for reminding us of the importance of caring for ourselves.

Hello Gerald, no extra oxygen needed so far. A canister filter would be nice to try, but the DC that I have has a 1 micron bag and a dust separator,  Without really knowing what my future is at this point I'm going to stick with what I have. For now I really don't see myself doing as much woodworking as before. Now it will be just projects around the home that need to get done, nothing more. Thanks for the tips anyway.

I hear ya Steve, I've had breathing problems since I was young. I have a small nose and when I had my tonsils takin out they removed my adnoids also. After the surgery the surgeon told my mother that he could not see how I could breath, that was the most adenoids he had removed from anyone. Well he was right, I couldn't breath.
