Grandfather clock....again

I haven't given up on my grandfather clock. The service guy did. I've tried several things and have had limited success to get it to run, it chimes OK. Today I discovered possible solution and the correct number to order a replacement mechanism.  The possible solution was a link (chimes on and off) the service guy put in that was on a serious bind and when you moved it, things bent. It has kept time for 18 hours and hopefully from now on.  If not, I'll go with the new mechanism.

I'm getting tired of this monster taking up my shop space and limiting my shop activity.

It has run now for 36 hours now. I have a new mechanism picked out to replace it, if it fails.

It was difficult to pick out, it has to fit my pendulum, which is an elaborate thing. I spent quite a while figuring it out. I saw 2 completely different ways to measure. I finally found the proper way. Measure from the pivot point (highest point on my mechanism) to the center of the disc (mass) at the bottom. I did and it came out exactly as one of the selections I can order.

My whole problem was introduced by the (so called) repairman I hired. I got my money bac and a problem clock.

I did some research on the old mechanism, the company went out of business in 1996. Replacement movements are not available. I was assured that another one would work fine. I ordered it, it would not fit and would take a LARGE structural change to make it work. I sent it back and ordered an c cell, electronic movement and heavy duty pendulum drive, mine is a heavy and long one. It was FAR from easy to install, but I got it in and it sounds great. You would not guess it is electronic.

I WILL BE SO GLAD TO GET THIS MONSTER OUT OF MY LIMITED SPACE SHOP!! IT IS NEARLY 7 FT TALL.

Since the electronic models are all I install when building new clocks I started to suggest one for you but then I thought I would have gotten laughed at so I didn't recommend one. I guess I read you wrong… I hope you got one that sets itself for daylight saving times...

Was it made by one of the plans from shops in Fairhope and Mobile, AL?  They were very popular in the 1950's through the 1970's.  The last one I visited over there in about 1990, the divorced wife was running it.  Her man had run off to Michigan.  Sometime in the 1990's, the shop finally closed up.  They no longer advertise and I suppose she may have retired from it.  You could get a kit or they would build it for you.  Expensive, either way.
