    I try to match the bit size to the shank of the screw. The part the threads wind around. I do it by eye, but a guy could use a caliper. In hardwood I drill the full length of the screw. In soft wood, I stop a bit shy of the full length to give the pointy end something to bite. And, I always lube the screw. I keep a melted toilet wax ring in a plastic box and stick all the screws in it. Keeps them handy and pre lubed.
