Mini Cremation Urn

Father of a friend died recently.  She requested an urn for her key chain so she could put some of his ashes in.  Since he was an avid hunter I used a 7.62x39 AR15 shell to make one.  It is a steel shell which I spun on the lathe to sand it fine and then nickel plated it.  I turned and polished a brass bullet and made a 1/4" threaded plug for the end.  Added a small slip ring and done it is.  The steel shell plated as easily as the brass shells did.

That's really neat. A great idea, too.

Dan!! That is crazy creative and over the top well thought out. I really admire your metal working skills too. Nicely done sir!

Nice work Dan!

That is a very unique idea and well executed .

Did you crimp the bullet in place?

Thanks Lew.  I made the bullet a few thousands big so it was a press fit into the shell.  Had to use my vise as a press to push it in.

Once again the artist in you comes out Dan, very creative and unique and fits the bill perfectly.

A little bit of though yielded big results. Nice job Dan.

By golly Dan that's great... but you can forget the urns for I need to order a box of shells for my 357 piss- toll- a. I keep it real close to my bed but can't find the bullets and my wife keeps reminding me the gun is empty.

Asked why he needed more ammo than his gun held, he replied "In case he keeps moving."

Fantastice idea and execution.

BTW, I wonder if there will be a chemical reaction that will effect the metals.  Anyone here specialized with the metals and ashes?  Something that I don't know so mostly curious.  Thank you.

No chemical reaction if no water I would think. There are some dry chemicals that will cause deterioration to aluminum. Not a expert but have a minor in chemistry due to my profession.

Never seen a key chain urn before. You did a wonderful job on that Dan and I know she loved it. I always enjoy seeing all the things you come up with.

Thanks Sid.  Happy to see you stopping here.  I would like to see more of the guys from Bill's site here too.  I don't see them to invite them.  If you do have them come by for a look.
