April 10, 20197 yr I wonder how they ever got anything built without one?? Thanks Smitty. Just saying, Herb
April 10, 20197 yr I'm not believing this one; sorry Smitty, doesn't pass the smell test. Sound is a very tricky measurement, and is reliable only with careful test restrictions. I could go on with a lot of factors, such as size and location of knotholes, but in the end, none of it matters. Wood structure element ratings are established with considerable safety factors (reflected sound isn't one of them!), and the relative hardness between two boards (determined by tapping with a hammer...?! BTW, which end of the hammer shown is the approved method?) doesn't change the size requirement, which is embedded in Code for many applications. So, no matter how many taps and handhelds you use, no one will use a 2x4 instead of a 2x6. Absent the ability to use smaller dimensions, there would be no savings, so why bother?
