A Project from Pine Wood...Sorta' Woodworking

Sorry wasn't enough time and too darn cold when the body work was being done. Started on this a little over three weeks ago. Most of the "shop" work on the body was done when the temperatures were in the 30's; Moved inside to the kitchen to paint, some of the weigh-in's and final assembly.

It had to be submitted 2 weeks ago this past Friday for "Technical Inspection." It did not pass as the wheels didn't meet the local criteria although they were BSA Pinewood approved, so the wheels & axles had to be replaced. That was done by the Scoutmaster.

Anyways, my grandson was happy, we had a fun time as all went well last Friday. Won his division and was .00019 seconds from winning all divisions. Set two track records during his runs; two first place and two second place heat runs. Winning time is the average of all four runs. Track is only 4 lanes wide so a run in each lane. Lost "Best in Show" by one point. He already has big ideas for next year.:D

From this...

...too this

RS View...he did LOTS of sanding all the painting, superglue the hood scoop and decals...I helped only a little with

the white paint pen other than suggest areas.

Helped with the axle pins & wheel installs. Some dust & a wood chip I see at this stage while we're still getting to final weight

Weights must be BSA approved = no lead. There's lots of weights concealed under this main weight so drill holes,

chiseling recesses.

Finally...made weight at home. Adding the two stickers did not take us over. Must weigh 5 oz +/- 0; Cannot exceed

7" in length, must have minimum of 3/8" clearance under the body. I'd planned more of a dovetail rear end like an

old Cord until I realized I'd screwed up with my scale set to grams versus ounces....hence all the extra weight to get

it to race weight.

Thanks Gerald. We may venture into a small woodworking project to build a trophy with car display shelf later on.

I'd have to weigh the trophies, but the cars might out-weigh them.

Congrats to you both.

As an aside, like we never wander off topic, your choice of font size sure makes it easier to read. Here's another vote to make it the default.

Nice work Dave.  Fun working the pit crew isn't it?  By rights the Pinewood Derby should have been long gone as a thing of the past.  I think the adult involvement keeps it alive.  Kudos to all those involved.

It is...even more fun as the "crew chief" watching him on race night and his excitement yet demonstrating humility and compassion toward his friends who didn't win. He's a good kid.

Hoping to get him more involved Artie. He has far more patience than I have.

Our attention spans are about the same though. I'm hoping his improves:lol:

Turned 8 y/o today...called him this AM. First time he's missed a birthday with his Mom.:(

When I was 8 all I could build was a boat. A piece of wood floating on the water. No specs.

Thanks for the pics Dave.  Congrats on the win:D

And happy birthday to the little guy.

Well done Dave!  Time well spent to create a lasting memory.  I remember those days but alas, we never took 1st place.
