January 22, 20197 yr Popular Post Hello Here are more pics of stuff I have made. The j-box has a little dust on the bottom trim (many sorries!). The wood is spalted maple with Cocobolo trim. The board is bubinga, curly maple, black walnut, and African padauk. When doing the last j-box, I considered taking sequential photos of the process. I can write out the process that I follow if anyone is interested. Photos would have to wait for the next box. Thanks for looking! hat Edited January 22, 20197 yr by hatuffej

January 22, 20197 yr Popular Post More pretties. You do very nice work, Hat. My conversations with the wood are usually unfit for little ears. But, I'm learning to listen more.

Where do you get your exotics Hat? Are you close to a Woodcraft, Rockler or similar store or do you order on-line? Just curious. Another beautiful box especially with the varied wood species to provide the contrast. So very unique. You do sign and date this don't you?

I have to drive 100 miles one way to Salt Lake City for my exotic woods. McBeath, Woodcraft sometimes (pricey), and International Lumber are my go-to suppliers. I have a friend who gave me nearly half of a log of black walnut. Another WWing buddy who is quitting because of arthritis in his hands gave me a bunch of maple and has me in line for the rest of his exotics. Yes, I sign and date all my work. hat

As for the exotics, I thought you were a good distance from large retail vendors. Your work certainly is worth the drive though.

Over the last couple of years, not only have prices moved up but availability has decreased. I can't find the beautiful kingwood I found before, and am nearly out of. I also can't find the beautiful blood-wood shown in one of my boxes. It was a gorgeous mixture of light-colored sapwood with the darker heartwood. My new rule is to buy more when I find the beautiful stuff. hat

January 23, 20197 yr Awesome pieces hat. I know that I would benefit if you took the time to walk us through the steps, especially if said narrative had accompanying pics.

January 23, 20197 yr I have worked with exotics for years. Rocklers and Woodcraft are close and it is easy to get. I have found that certain exotic set off my allergies, so I take extra precautions with ALL exotics and some domestics, such as Walnut. Once when I was looking for new color I came upon a beautiful board with red streaks. As I was about to pick it up, I saw a large sign in red print, "Caution this wood is a member of the Sumac family, such as poison Ivy and poison Oak" I can only imagine what the dust from that would do to my body.
January 23, 20197 yr Author Hello Ron I also suffer from black walnut dust, primarily because I forget to put on the dust mask when working it. hat.
