Several years ago, I was conducting New Employee Orientation plus an Assembly Training Class for the first production employees hired at a new facility about 1-1/2 hours south of Atlanta. The facility was still under construction, so the class was held at a local community college. I had completed my personal introduction and background history including projecting a map of Indiana showing where the "mother" plant was located and where I lived. I may also have mentioned the proximity to the little community of Pittsboro, IN where Jeff Gordon began his racing career with go-carts and 1/4 midgets. When I finished talking, a rather large young man from Alabama (probably should have been playing tight end or wide receiver at Alabama) raised his hand, then stood up and very politely stated in a long, deep Southern drawl, "Daaave, dooo yooou think I taaalk with an acceenntt?"...You could have heard a pin drop in the room... I responded, "Nope not at all...I assumed the only person speaking with an accent this week was me!" The class erupted in laughter...That group "adopted me" as one of their own for the entire week. They probably were one of the most engaged technical classes I ever taught.

February 11, 20196 yr Author Popular Post My college roommate had a high school buddy that was studying civil engineering. One of the courses he was taking was something like "sewage management." My roommate called it "The Science of Floating Turds." About 10 years ago they were upgrading the capacity of the sewer line that went right below the road in front of my house. The city had an information session and the engineer from the metro sewer district was there to do a presentation and answer questions. I'm thinking, "Holy cow, there are people who really know all about sewage management." Glad there is, gladder it's not me.

February 15, 20196 yr Author Was back at the furniture bank Thursday for a meeting. All seven 8' shelves are full of dishes and linens already. I predict another round in the future.
February 18, 20196 yr Looks like the move, and accompanying build, might be as much fun as the shop will be afterwards. Good project, good motives, good results.

February 18, 20196 yr Impressive what this service has accomplished in a year. Great metrics for accountability and to support the Vision/Mission/Purpose. Thank-you Keith (and the entire team there) for your service and commitment making a real difference in people's lives. 8 minutes ago, kmealy said: It's moving to see the number of people helped and what their situation is.
