Michael Thuman Posted January 9, 2019 Report Posted January 9, 2019 I am going to build the Wood Magazine issue 259 Display case. The glass shelves I would like to radius and polish the edges. Is that possible in the shop or would have a glass shop do this? Also in my humble opinion that finish was terrible if you invest in white oak you need to color it to highlight the grain. What do you think? Quote
Popular Post lew Posted January 9, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted January 9, 2019 I didn't see the article but I would have the glass shop do all of the rounding and finishing of the glass. FlGatorwood, Cal, HARO50 and 2 others 5 Quote
HandyDan Posted January 9, 2019 Report Posted January 9, 2019 A second vote to have the glass shop do their thing. I usually leave any species to its own color. Not a fan of coloring/staining it. BLO will do a nice job of bringing out ot's natural beauty. HARO50 and FlGatorwood 2 Quote

Yes it is possible, no I would not recommend it for a project on a first try. A glass shop will be your best bet for this part of the project. 2 hours ago, Michael Thuman said: if you invest in white oak you need to color it to highlight the grain. What do you think? No right or wrong answer on this, beauty is subjective to personal taste. Cal, HARO50, Grandpadave52 and 1 other 4 Quote

Popular Post Michael Thuman Posted January 9, 2019 Author Popular Post Report Posted January 9, 2019 Thanks all but my daughter for whom this is being built want a dark stain similiar to a mission style. Even thought the display case is not of a mission style. I wish I could paste in a picture unfortunately it is copyrighted by the Magazine owner. I will try the blo on some scrap and then final coat in Laq or water based Poly. As to the glass thanks for confriming I would hate to start shaping it then have glass spliters in the hands. Thanks all. Gunny, Cal, Dadio and 3 others 6 Quote
DuckSoup Posted January 9, 2019 Report Posted January 9, 2019 Mike, not sure of the size on the shelves but I would think you would want to use tempered glass. Cal, Grandpadave52, HARO50 and 1 other 4 Quote
DAB Posted January 9, 2019 Report Posted January 9, 2019 this is where i take the design and re-design it to avoid curved glass.... Gunny and Cal 2 Quote

The plan calls for the following Shelves 14 5/8 x 36 7/8 1/4" glass supported on 4 shelf pins. I will probably use double strength. Top 10 5/8 x 32 3/8 1/4" glass I will probably use double strength Sides 12 1/8x 23 5/8 single strength seeded glass (I will use clear double strength becuase of my daughters large dogs and I want clear views). Doors 13 9/16 x 23 1/2 single strength seeded glass (I will user clear double strength becuase of my daughter large dogs and I want clear views). Cal, p_toad, Grandpadave52 and 1 other 4 Quote
