sphere turning gizmo

Featured Replies

so  ummm  I got a bug up my tail  I just had to have  a gizmo to turn spheres.

Got some  4" round stock and  made the body  that runs on a large diameter taper roller bearing ans some 1" steel  flat stock and  made the other parts.

Some how I didn't think one inch was over kill.

It was.

So it's almost done.  I gotta take it apart and  install the  groove for the large o-ring that will keep crud out of the bearing.  B\

BUT  I used it today to turn the large  ball that I'll put on the end of the handle.  Mind you I hadn't even a tiny clue how to use this thing.

As it turns out  it's gotta be centered under the centerline of the presumptive ball.  OK that was easy.

But because I hadn't mounted the handle  - not yet decided on whether it needs a bend configuration to facilitate use - because of that I had to use other means to turn it.

Crescent wrench to the rescue.

I was appalled at  how easy it was to cut steel  even a good heavy pass.  I ended up just grabbing the thing with my fingers and  operated it that way.  The forces on this giizmo are not heavy at all.

Turns out  one  inch was  definitely over kill.

well it works

no pics yet but here's a vid of me turning the component that the handle mounts to

That is too cool for school.  A lot of work went into that.  I like it.
