Barn Quilting anyone?

Featured Replies

Greetings all,

I am getting into the barn quilting craze and looking for a source for wood panels to use. The local craft stores are selling unfinished 8'X8" boards for $5.99 and 12"x12" for $9.99.

I was thinking about possibly using some veneer but I think 1/2" or 3/4" hardwood instead. I'm not finding much success with coming up with enough pallet wood or scraps from the cut bin at the local wood yards, any suggestions?

How big are the barn quilts?

I'm looking to make them 12"x12" if I can find as source that has something the proper size. If not the I will have to adjust based on what I can find.

What is barn quilting?

Is there a local sawmill in your area?

looking for mills but haven't found any yet. I'm just getting off the ground with this and was hoping I wouldn't have to search for a convenient and affordable source of materials.

You should be able to glue up boards to get the width you want. For outdoor applications, just be sure the glue is made for exterior use.

Ok. Learned something today.

So the size of two sheets of plywood.

There is a automotive repair shop just down the road from me, I'm guessing that he has about 100 pallets stacked tip in front of the place. I've often wondered what I could do with them, now you just gave me one more use for them. Some day I just may have to stop by and ask what they do with them.

Didn't know barn quilting was a thing.  Never saw any around here but will have to look harder now that I know it could be out there.

Welcome aboard Commy_2

My first thought would be to use MDO plywood, sometimes referred to as "sign plywood".

https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/panel-products/mdf-mdo-panels/roseburg-1-2-x-4-x-8-mdo-plywood/1255003/p-1444452504136.htm

It is made for exterior use and has one side with a paper face.  In this area most building supplies can rip or cut plywood sheets to size for you - sometimes 1 or 2 cuts are free.

Tell us a bit more about the quilts.  They are much larger than 12"x12".  Do you paint up the squares and then mount them to backer boards or a sheet of plywood?  If that were the case you might not need an actual 12x12 board, you could do with 2 pieces of 6"x12" boards or 3 pieces of 4"x12"?  That would be much more doable with pallet material...

A couple thoughts about both pallets and wood scraps you might find.  They are (again, in this area) just tossed and stacked up outside.  That means wet, and that means time to dry out before painting.  Pallets left as pallets to dry will stay straighter (relatively) than will small cut up pieces.  Any wet lumber needs air circulation around it to dry properly.

In addition to the suggestions already given, if you haven't already, check your area Craiglist Postings under "Free", "Materials", "Farm+Garden", "Garage Sales" and "General."

In my area, I see various types of lumber, saw mill services, pallets and the like quite frequently. Worth taking the time to watch on a regular basis.
