Jess, in the search box above right type in "steel wool" and enter, or click on the magnifying glass. You'll get a good number of hits on it and you should be able to find your post you are looking for.

Jesse, I use Liberon 0000 for smoothing and waxing the final finish. It doesn't have any oils in it. Never tried it on bare wood, though. 

Or, you may be talking about synthetic pads that come in different colors. The  white pad is extra-fine, approximately equivalent to 600-grit sandpaper; gray compares to 220-grit; maroon, 150-grit; and green, 100-grit. Usually available at the big box stores. Or most all online woodworking suppliers like Woodcraft. Amazon, too.
