Spray gun

Featured Replies

Ideas for a decent priced spray system? I'm a woodworker and not a finisher kind of guy. Looking for a sprayer for doing the various home improvement jobs, and projects for friends and family. Not needing a $20,000 Spray gun, but want something better than a $2 gun. Rattle cans give less than desired quality, and I don't have the patience to brush the stuff on. I do have an air compressor, thoughts??

Hate to mention this supplier (whisper) Harbor Freight but a bunch of years ago I bought one of their $14 purple one. This was before the HVLP guns. I have sprayed latex (thinned) and some poly. It works like a champ.

The HF gun that Lew mentioned gets rave reviews by quite a few folks. For the money, it would be well worth trying before jumping into something more expensive.

The last car I "restored" I sprayed Rustoleum oil base, top coated with a clear coat using the HF purple gun.  Results were very satisfactory.

What size of air compressor do you have?  Do you have any water trap/filter in-line?  Even with the in-line trap & filter I would recommend one of the small disposable filters at the gun.  HF also sells those: https://www.harborfreight.com/disposable-inline-moisture-filter-68224.html

Have plenty of the appropriate cleaner for the type of paint you are using.  And expect to spend more time cleaning the gun after usage than you spent actually using it!

Amen!

I have the HF purple gun and I am considering getting a new system.  If you get the HF guns you will need a compressor which puts out a lot of CFM air.  I was surfing the net looking at the Fuji Mini-mite 4 HVLP systems and I found the AeroJet RS1 HVLP Turbine Spray Gun.  The Aerojet is much cheaper and is a similar system.  Take a look at this video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vv_k6gz8r4.  Let us know what you purchase.  Danl

Should have mentioned I will be using gun to spray lacquer, varnish etc, and not paint, if that makes a difference. Have a big air compressor at the shop I work at and will be doing my spraying there

No difference that I am aware of Kenny

What is the CFM requirements for this gun?

Per H-F site specs on this gun

So what size compressor would one use.  My pressure is in the relm.  The flow rate 6 CFM seems really low for HVLP.

I run a 33 gal Craftsman which has the following ratings:

8.6 CFM  @ 40 psi

6.4 CFM  @ 90 psi

Max HP 6  150 psi

Running HP 2

This compressor is one of the older ones.  The newer compressors have a lower CFM rating.  I would be hesitant using a smaller compressor.
