Figure 8’s on a Table Top

Featured Replies

I’m building a farm table and the top measures 40” x 84”.  The top is 6/4 poplar and really heavy.  I’m going to attach the top to the apron with figure 8 fasteners so here’s the question.  Is there a good rule of thumb as to how many figure 8s I should use?  Inquiring minds want to know.

the measures should be from the inside dimensions of the apron...

3 in 40''...

1 - 2'' in from the table leg..

1 - center of apron...

1 - 2'' in from the opposing table leg..

5 on the long apron......

1 centered...

1 ea 2'' in from each leg...

1 ea centered to the ones at the leg and the one that is centered on the apron..

this is to deal w/ any outside mechanical stress...

you can increase the counts if you wish to 4 or 5 and 6 or 7 which is more gooder still...

the set back of 2'' is an arbitrary minimum... it's to help avoid any of the apron rails/stiles from splitting from mechanical stress...

Thanks Stick you beat me to nearly the same answer.

Ron people will naturaly pick up the table by the top.

That said the number of figure 8's depends a lot on the dimensions stick gave and the weight they need to support.

If the undercarriage is very heavy you may consider adding even more to stop bending the 8's or pulling out the screws.
