Put on a jacket that hadn't been worn in a while and, this was in a pocket. Have no idea where it came from...or when it got put in the pocket.

It appears to be an unused #8 Phillips head but, those machine threads have me stymied. Anybody know how/why it's used?

Is that the type used to stop squeaky floors??

Maybe. download.jpeg.6b1e68f7c135eac866bd42b8636596ef.jpeg

the part in your fingers is the the holding feature...

the other part is the draw down feature for the top material so that two pieces of material are drawn together sa you drive the screw......

those screws are used almost exclusively on composite decking...

they also tend to eliminate mushrooming....

can we say - ''those screws suck''....

I can see how they probably wouldn't be too good at that, Stick. As you can see, the machine threads are the same diameter as the wood threads. Weird.

I'll take your word for that, never having worked with composite decking.

Mystery solved. It's a door hardware mounting screw.

Yup, your right, they are used in locks and dead bolts. Have you in the recent past done any hardware mounting?

We used them on wood or hollow  metal doors.

Yep, not recently. But the jacket hasn't been worn recently, either.

I guess it is that time again to break out the jackets. The breeze has a cold feeling to it.

You sure the jacket is yours?;)
