September 5, 20187 yr Popular Post Not to steal his post. My sanding station started with a florescent light defuser 36 x 24" and built around just 24 x 24". The big dust extractor is a few feet away shooting the dust outside. I put the intake in the middle of the bottom and put a round board above the 4" suction to spread the air all around the inside. This was just my experimental model and was going to build it better after I got what I wanted but then hey it worked great on the first go around so there it is...About hump teen years ago I epoxied the pipe underneath and propped it up with another piece of pvc and it is still sitting there all these years... The defuser being plastic I decided to build a strong foundation under the plastic so it would not crack and ruin... Now when I need to blow out that end of the shop I turn on the sanding station extractor and get after the dust with the blow gun.. The base is welded up angle with swivel wheels...Every thing in the shop is on wheels. The bottom is a 4 way slope also.

September 6, 20187 yr I really like the convenience of using the light reflector. Saves drilling a buncha holes. OTOH the reflectors can cost a bit, and drilling holes is supposed to be in our wheelhouse?! For personal safety, where the very fine (~5 micron) particles are the problem (entering your lungs), AND where you use machine sanding (ROS), a vac hose on the sander does much better than any other device. For those who find they are specially allergic to the dust, some variety of face mask. The three principles of particulate capture are velocity / velocity / velocity: side shields increase the vacuum velocity effect on small dust. If you can arrange an open door, use a side-blowing fan to simply push it all away from the work point. Avoid downstream!
September 6, 20187 yr Author The light deflector was the first item purchased at a Habitat for Humanity store when it opened in Abilene. I asked how much and they said 2.00. They only had a stack of the reflectors and not the complete fixture..Someone much have been changing the appearance in their remodeling exercise.. Now the store is so big two big dumpsters sits out back and if you don't find what you are looking for inside they point out back to look there for free.. When sanding something I don't want scratched I spread the holey drawer liner material over the plastic grates. I go into their store with a list just like I carry to garage sales on things that might help in my wild thinking of building things.. I can buy things here for experiments and not loose much if things don't work out the way I was thinking..
