Seems you are on top of things. I would make several paddles out of Hickory, Ash, or whatever is strong. If you have those type of things laying around you would be surprised how nice kids are. It worked for me. LOL

I am making a piggy bank for a girl I know who has a little girl. (About 3 months old). I have made several of these in the past and they seem to like them. Maybe it will get the little girl started with saving money.

I found a pair (had 2 g-kids born within same month) of 3-in-1 crib/beds, and  dressers with changing trays were really used, and 4 years later still in use.  (3-in-1 should really be 2-in-1:  toddler version is so briefly needed, don't bother.)  Another HUGE hit:  "learning tower" (google it).  The two kids use them everyday, many times a day.  Both moms delighted.  I copied the idea from web sites, made my own versions (pocket screws).  I have production notes on the LT's.
