John Morris Posted August 11, 2018 Report Posted August 11, 2018 Irish, the sticks are beautiful and incredible and unique, and just all out cool. Thanks so much for sharing! A few questions, what was the method of carving used? What type of wood? What finish? How long does one stick take? What are your inspirations? Sorry for the many questions, but I am very interested, thanks again for sharing. HARO50 1 Quote
John Morris Posted August 11, 2018 Report Posted August 11, 2018 And, how did you create the depth with the dark tones on the sticks? Quote
Grandpadave52 Posted August 11, 2018 Report Posted August 11, 2018 Those are fantastic "Sixty." Beautiful pieces of art Thanks for sharing. BTW, while yours may have the King designation, we all know who the ruling authority is. steamshovel, John Morris, Artie and 1 other 2 2 Quote

Hardest part was the area of the stick where you can see through (second set of pictures - on the right) The wood is basswood (2 x 2 inch square) The finish is just clear poly I would have to guess each stick took between 60 - 70 hours in total (obviously not all at once - LOL) Inspirations? Well lets just say each stick was limited to the carving technique (patterns) I knew how to cut. Then it was just a matter of fitting them together to make them look pleasing - like the center in the bottom picture - to tie the two fan shapes together - had to arch the pattern in the middle. As far as getting the shading - same technique I use on my plaques. I sealed the stick with about 4 coats of clear poly, when finished, I used a small brush and placed gel stain in the carved areas - let sit for a few seconds, then wipe off the high spots. The stain wipes off while remains in the carved areas. Thanks again for the comments and questions - feel free to ask away with any other questions. Bob (aka IrishWoodCarver & Sixty_Vette) BTW Dave - you are CORRECT! Al B Posted August 11, 2018 Report Posted August 11, 2018 It sure is nice to see your work here Vette. IrishWoodcarver here. I've missed your carvings. Beautifull walking sticks. I'd be proud to walk with these by my side. steamshovel and IrishWoodCarver 2 Quote
HandyDan Posted August 11, 2018 Report Posted August 11, 2018 Gorgeously carved walking sticks. Bass wood is supposed to be great for carving but it still takes a skilled artisan to have this end result. I hope you and your wife enjoy walking many miles with those. IrishWoodCarver 1 Quote

Old Coasty Posted August 19, 2018 Report Posted August 19, 2018 Looking at these scares the living daylights out of me. SWAMBO is agitating for me to make us a pair of walking sticks. She hasn't seen these, and hopefully won't, as I can't even dream of making something as beautiful as these. IrishWoodCarver and Cal 1 1 Quote
