July 31, 20187 yr Popular Post I spent the day yesterday judging 4-H woodworking projects at the Ohio State Fair. There were some amazing projects by these young people. I've been there one way or the other (parent, advisor, judge) for 32 of the last 34 years. They make one project at home, complete a skills project and interview at the fair. https://www.facebook.com/Ohio4HEngineering-1024369504275083/?hc_ref=ARSquOhBXNMSmSx812avwHDhY8vgZfYTxCcAEXLbQ9xnAyreSD_Ps59k3vQ_BmMD4Is Edited July 31, 20187 yr by kmealy
July 31, 20187 yr Good on you Keith for sharing your time, expertise and passion with the WW'ers and potential trades workers of tomorrow. Some cool projects too.
July 31, 20187 yr WOW! Some stupendous work by those youngsters. A very ingenious and talented bunch of kids. It's wonderful to see this sort of exhibition. Thanks for bringing it to us, Keith. And many, many thanks for your support and dedication to a very worthy enterprise.
July 31, 20187 yr Thanks for providing guidance for the young people. Not many folks, today, would take the time.
July 31, 20187 yr Author Popular Post A bit of history: When my eldest of three daughters was 8 (she turned Sunday) she took this and got and "outstanding of the day" award. Repeated for next 3 or 4 years, second daughter took over with the same, and then third. When they were done, I got involved in judging, helping re-define the judging criteria, and continued as a judge ever year since except one year when I had surgery and another when daughter #1 was expecting with twins and living with us. There were really some good entries in my class this year. On my way out a father stopped me and said his daughter really enjoyed the judging interview with me. She got one of the top prizes for a very excellent jewelry box. Were it not for the very last person I judged, she would have gotten the top prize. Both projects were well done, but the one I had to go with was a bed with removable shelving headboard and footboard. I think he used about 8 different joints in various parts of the project -- dado, dado and rabbet, half-lap,pocket screw, mitered shop-made molding strips, doors, drawers, etc.
August 1, 20187 yr Had the priviledge of going to one of these type events while on vacation at Lake of the Ozarks. The imagination and craftsmanship was amazing.

Worse because I keep it short. But I still have more hair than any of my 3 sons-in-law. This was in contention for one of the top prizes, but I really feared that his breadboard end was eventually going to lead to failure. He biscuited it all together. I told him about how wood moves and breadboard ends should be done.
