July 22, 20187 yr There was a letter to the editor in the paper about how the USMM song was not played during a celebration. I recall a couple of years ago the US Coast Guard song was not played during a VD celebration. Many folks think the songs should be played while some don't. The USMM had the highest casualty ratio during WWII, were ordered into service, and were considered part of the US military. They played a vital role in the war effort. I am always amazed that some folks seem reluctant to celebrate veterans. hat side note: I can't correct the "Us" to US in the topic title. Edited July 22, 20187 yr by hatuffej

July 22, 20187 yr Popular Post Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with a 90 y.o. guy who retired from the Merchant Marine service after 32 years. He reminisced, I listened. One of the most enlightening hours I've spent. His stories told of the glorious and fascinating history and, his time in, the MM. It was evident that he thoroughly enjoyed and, was proud, of his service. I asked him what an old sea dog like him was doing here in the desert. He said he just got tired of salt water. He said he fishes a lot. But, only from the bank.
July 22, 20187 yr Popular Post As strange as it may seem, I had an uncle (by marriage) who spent the better part of a lifetime in the US merchant marine. He rose through the ranks, and was a Ship's Master during WW II. He lost a ship off the coast of Madagascar to an Italian sub, and another was torpedoed (or hit a mine, depending on which report you read) running supplies to the coast of France. I only met him a few times, but his stories were fascinating, and will be with me for life! He gave me a memento of his time in the service, the brass buttons off his last pea coat. R.I.P, Capt. Carl Norman! John
