Notching a Tree

Featured Replies

I've watched many trees being cut down in my time. My brother was a tree guy and when he notched a tree,  he would put an axe blade in the notch with the handle sticking out and that is the direction and place where he would drop it. He was extremely accurate. Today I saw a crew do it a little different. After the tree was notched, he stuck the saw blade (not running)in the notch. Then he went behind the tree, where he could see the blade protruding  out both sides. He pulled out a black magic marker and drew a line around the tree from one side of the saw blade to the other. That is where he cut and it fell perfectly. It was an Aspen and it is nearly white and easy to see the mark. I suppose he had a paint pencil for other trees.
