Saw an add listing an indoor garage sale.  I went and the owner was motivated to sell.  He rented the building and needed it cleared out.  Got all this for three dollars.

The rule and center finder both say hardened and made in the USA but there is no brand name.  The bits are dovetail bits for the metal lathe.  One was never used.  The brown handled driver has a centering drill bit in the end and the metal shaft unscrews from the handle.  Never saw anything like it before and not sure what it's use was.  I bought the nippers for pulling nails.  I thought the rounded jaws would make it work smoothly.  Best deal I found in a while.

I am thinking the brown handle item is a screw starter. Kinda strange that a nice rule and center finder would have no maker marks.

Looked all over it even with a magnifier.  Maybe once it is cleaned.

Cool finds and worth the trip for $3...

Like Gerald my first thought was some sort of screw starter or maybe a gimlet...looking closer at the tip and especially since the bit is removable from the handle, might also be part of a "high end" leather makers hand stitch tool set. Just a guess.

The nippers sure look like a farriers nippers which are used for pulling nails from horse shoes/hooves. Got some age on it too. Hard to tell if it was painted black or if it had japanning on it. The pruners are cool too. I've got a set like those somewhere...tried using them some..real finger pinchers was my experience:P

It is not a speedy stitcher.  I have some of those.  the shaft unscrews from the handle and the bit in the end is one of these center bits.  It is jammed in the end of the tool and won't come out either.  Maybe it is for hand drilling a counter sink in a soft material.

Got the rule and center finder cleaned up and there is no brand name.  It has the Starret hammered style paint.  Picked up a square at a yard sale for &1.00.  Has no name on it either.  It is not hardened but is accurate and appears to be well made.  Has some weight to it too.

Here's the handles tool with the tip unscrewed.

Sweet! The center finder could be a Starrett but the retaining bolt "nut" is not consistent with the older style Starrett's since it appears to be steel (rust) versus brass.

On the other hand, the adjustable square head could very well be Starrett...the nut is identical (with the 'double ridge/long dome') to my early 40's Starrett as is the smooth finish. Add that to the "weight" which indicates it must be made of cast steel. Maybe the scale is not Starrett, but the head sure could be....regardless a GREAT find for a buck.

That handles tool is baffling...does look like a drill bit end; being interchangeable tips makes it very unique...great tool for the "What's It" game.:P

But weren't all Starretts stamped with the name on the head and Starrett & Co on the rule? At least mine are and I also have Craftsman and Stanley rules in a couple of mine. I will have to look at the 4 inch and see if it is marked.

Yup but I got to the sale late and it should have been gone before I got it.  There was quite a knife collection but nothing grabbed my eye.  Had a lot of Barlow but I have some too.

I had to look...mine is stamped on the rule and the angle finder, but not the square head or center finder. Circa 1940's; was my grandfathers.
