May 26, 20188 yr Was "Hit or Miss" today.....just missed those pipe clamps..... About 4 hours on the trail this morning, counting Lunch....spent more for lunch than I spent on my two items.. Saw has Popular Mechanics silk-screened on it..it and the mitre box was $10....got it for $7.....That Millers Falls jack plane? Had a little over a dollar in change in my pocket....fellow said "close enough!" Who am I to argue? Miller Falls No. 14....may need a tad bit of clean up? Rest of the time was spent driving from one sale to another....nose was itching when I got near these two sales... Other than being way too hot outside, wasn't too bad of a day ....for a "Bandit"

Probably irritation from the mask you were wearing 2 hours ago, steven newman said: wasn't too bad of a day ....for a "Bandit" The "Buckeye Bandit" rides again! What era do you guess the M-F Jack Plane is from? 30's? 40's? Brand logo on the lever cap is not one I've seen.
May 26, 20188 yr Author Will know more when I clean it up...may take a day, or so...have to evict a bunch of spiders, and their nests...
May 27, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Clean up was one of those shows you see on TV..Called "Dirty Jobs" Plane is a Type 3...1941-1949...Those long handle bolts were blued....I cleaned the blueing off with the rust...Chipbreaker was on the wrong side of the iron.. This is the side with the logo....chipbreaker also goes here....no wonder the edge is so good..chipbreaker was "protecting it..." What the "new" plane is supposed to look like. Gave everything a soak in WD40.... Lever cap cleaned up Traces of red paint...will replace the paint... Used a pair of Visegrips to hold the bolts and washers, while I wire wheeled them clean...Tuned the chipbreaker, worker a bit on the iron... Which left these three items to clean up...wire wheel to GENTLY remove what was left of the wood's finish...base was a nasty, dirty job.. Even the sole and sides were in dire need of a good scrubbing... Looking a little better...wire wheels to clean all the mess off...wire brush and a screwdriver to clean the nooks and crannies...wiped things down...several times.. First coat of Rustoleum Black....may get a second one. That red paint? called Cardinal Red...used to fix scratches on cars.... You "flood" the area, let it dry, then buff off the excess. Frog needed new red paint, as well...hands...needed hot water and soap... handles? Originals were stained a Walnut....and were made out of hardwood...Sharpening jig is ready to be set up for working on the iron. Letting the paints dry, overnight. Might get this finished up tomorrow....$1.35 plane?

May 27, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Here ya go. . Type 2 in the backand the new kid on the block May add an oil & wax to the stained handles... They have "sole" Not too bad..for a 70 yr old jack plane? And..almost the whole Fan damily Still another #9 in the til... Newer ones tended to have fancier handles...
May 27, 20188 yr Well done! Another one rescued from extinction. Too bad people don't realize what they have under the rust, dirt, spider webs. You are the plane-master.
May 27, 20188 yr Thanks for the step by step. I have always left off on painting the letters in so now I know how.
