I Lost My Blade Sharpener

Featured Replies

I made a call today to my "go to" guy for sharpening my table saw blades only to find out that he dies in September.  Not only am I saddened but I'm bummed.  Mac was great at what he did.  He was a retired tool grinder from Chrysler and will be hard to replace.  OK guys, where do you get your blades sharpened?  I saw a place in Coral Cables Florida online that is pretty reasonable at $15 for a 10" blade but haven't pulled the rigger on sending blades to them.  Any opinions or suggestions?

Wish I could help Ron...kinda' in the same boat as you. For a number of years I used four guys who had retired from TRW in Lafayette. They had a shop across from one of the older TRW plants. They were great and very reasonable...did carbide as well as HSS...hole saws, forstner bits, router bits, hand-saws, planer knives...you name it. I hadn't been there for some time so about a year ago I thought I would stop by and check in; business is gone, no signs or anything.

I put out a similar question to the Montgomery County Woodworkers Club; surprisingly no recommendations came back; a few took them to one of our local, family owned lumber yards to be sent off, but they didn't know where they went. It was a meeting topic too a few months ago, but I was unable to attend.

There is a  place just West of Frankfort, IN (Jefferson) that I used years ago...they were just a small "job shop" then but did high quality work...a little pricey even then...not sure if they do non-commercial work any more or not? Might give them a call. You deal with Frank Miller Lumber a lot...maybe give them a call for any recommendations too.

Phillips Saw & Tool

I'm kind of lucky. There's a guy here in town that has a small operation. He an elderly gentleman so I may be in the same boat one of these days.

Ron, if you intend to send them out I've have 2 suggestions. The first is Bull Sharpening in Oak Park IL. They are a full service shop (they do it all) and I've used them for over 15 years. Great service, great work, and what seems to be a very competitive price. The second is Dynamic Saw. I've used them a lot less, and only tried them when I saw so many folks gushing about them on another forum. They are just as good as Bull, but being in Buffalo NY the shipping might be a tad higher. Either would be first rate choices. I've never had a local guy, around me they are all tool butchers, removing about 1/2 of whatever carbide the balde had when it went in....so I mail my blades out. One other possibility that gets a lot of praise. Scott Whiting in AZ. I've not used his service since he's quite a bit further away from me but he is always mentioned with high praise.

Yup, happened to me too.  About a month ago I took a set of jointer knives up to Macon where I used to go; no business, no sign, no nothing.

There is a guy I see at the local farmers market with a mobil sharpening service, so I asked him what he would charge.  (Hope you are sitting down)...  $25 per 6" knife!!!  I told him I would have to think about that and ended up buying a new set from Tools Today https://www.toolstoday.com  They were prompt in shipping and I had them in a couple days.

Next time I get a haircut I will try to remember to ask my barber who he uses as I know that he sends his clipper blades out for sharpening.  I also think I will give Bull or Dynamic a shot too.

I use Scott Whiting as Fred noted. He's very good. And very accommodating. He has modified some rip blades and a dado set to produce flat bottoms...no bat wings. He uses CNC equipment. Very precise grinds.

I spoke with Bull Sharpening up in Chicago and they seem to be pretty good guys.  An 80 tooth blade is $14 so I'm sending a few of those and my dado set.  Dado set is $32.  Fingers crossed.

I've had them sharpen my dado set 3 times now. The only thing you may not like is there becomes a point where the anti kickback "nubs" (if your set has them) get ground off. I guess they can't shape them down, so they just remove them altogether. I'll be inteested to hear your opinion of their work once your blades are returned.

Here's Scott Whiting's prices

Thanks Gene.  Scott's is just around the corner, as we measure it in AZ!
