Anyone use satellite internet?

Featured Replies

At my house I have 2 choices for internet service, the first is the one I have. It's a wireless microwave system that comes off a 1000' tower less than 7 miles away. When it works it's not too bad (a little slow) but they have had so many technical problems lately I'm considering a change. The second and only other choice if satellite like Hughesnet ot one of the TV services. I've been advised in the past to avoid that at all costs. In fact, my neighbor has it and she describes it as "like not having internet". Is it that bad? Any experiences you want to share? We use internet for so many truly important things anymore that not having it is really a serious problem.

Fred, my dad has Hughes net here in So Cal. He lives up in the mountains and it's the only choice he has. And it is bundled with Direct TV. He has not had any complaints with Hughes Net, but his usage is very simple, he gets email, pays bills, and surfs the net. He does not stream anything, the plan that would allow that would be too expensive. So his data cap is pretty low.

Do you all have Verizon wireless in your area for cell phones? If you did, you could use a Verizon hotspot or any other wireless cell provider for that matter.

Yes we do have Verizon, and while I'm a holdout on cell phones, I find I may be having to get one (for reasons unrelated to our internet problem). If I do it would be a partial solution to unreliable internet since my wife has an Ipad that we would put on the account.

Yep, just get a data plan, and you can hook up any device you want. 10gb plan is all you'd need for general surfing and paying bills. My family of 5 has a wireless plan, 10gb, we never use it all.

Satelite internet has the same issue durng rain snow wind ice ...... On good south California days I bet it is 95% reliable but in the mid west I would say 70%.   The phones may cost less but those need little computers are awesome.

Fred, what are you using, a laptop, desktop?

I'm on Macs, both desktops. My wife uses an Ipad (actually, 2 of them). One is wi-fi only, but the other is both wi-fi and wireless. We just haven;'t bothered with a cell phone yet....no need really, but many everyday things are starting to ask for a smart phone so I'm considering getting one. At least then I could take care of the important stuff on here Ipad, like prescriptions, bills, check book, etc. When I do this, I'll buy an unlocked Iphone and then check the various services.

Fred, a smart phone is cool, but you don't need one, what I am talking about is a Verizon Hot Spot device. It would take the place of the internet service provider you currently have. You would purchase a subscription plan from Verizon, or your carrier of choice, and activate this handy device, and set it in the same room as your pc or laptops. It's a hotspot. You can take this anywhere and use it anywhere you have service coverage. We use these at work while out in the field, we just fire up our laptops, and fire this hotspot up, and we have internet connection.

Now that being said, you can do the same thing with a cell phone and data plane, most cell phones can double as a hotspot. But if you don't want to mess with a smart phone, you can get this little device and have internet anywhere you go.

Thanks, John. That may be a good alternative...I'll look into that.
