Saturday, Phyl and I went to Jim Grey's Petrified Wood store in Holbrook, AZ to get some pics of his collection of Manzanita burls and, once again marvel at his beautiful petrified wood creations. 

 

Here is some of the pics.

 

These are the smallest. About 6-8" long and some that wide or less. 

 

 

 

 

This next sized ones are around 8" and thicker.

 

 

The largest ones are about the size of your head. Phyl is holding one of the smaller ones in that box. Selected for it's interesting formation.

 

Here are a few more pics from the store.

This base is Manzanita and the top is a polished slab of petrified wood. $2K for the base and 7K for the top.

 

 

 

This is a solid slab of petrified wood inlayed in an unknown wood table. Price is $28K. Doesn't include the chairs.

 

Just a small sampling of Jim's wares. The store is around 100X100 and chock full. It sets on about 50 acres of nothing but Petrified wood logs he's collected from all over the US and other countries.

 

Finally, here's a a new frend we made.

WOW, I had no idea what they looked like! Almost to interesting to cut up or turn but I'll bet they are beautiful inside!

Maybe, I'll get one of the larger ones and slab it, just to see.

We been through that area many times going to LV but wife says those trips are no more.... She seems to think either of us could stand the pain of walking from one end of LV Blvd and back again..

   Also when driving through the Petrified Forest and thinking back to when those rocks were standing trees was a little hard for this ole mind to grasp!.

   Did they ever come up how long ago all this happened and did the hole in the ground have any thing to do with the forest decline??

   I have a preacher son in law who says the grand canyon is less than 10,000 years old. I don't think he has ever stood on the rim looking down on the river and come up with this number!!?

Those are some nice burls and such.  Seem to be great prices too.  I would go broke if a store like that was near me.

Gene, I got two places for you guys to go in your state. Wife and I like to take a different road to where ever we go and found two amazing places. Just a sight seeing trip.The road to drive down use to be 666 but now 191 from Springerville to 1-10 just east of Willcox. Its a kinda of a top of the world kind of trip.. Do take food and water but don't have to get out of the car kinda jog. 

   Then heading to LV one day going west down 1-10 we turned on 70 at Lordsburg, NM and headed toward Las Vegas. Somewhere before we crossed 1- 17 out in the middle of no where we came to the biggest motorcycle wrecking yards I had ever seen. And why did they put it so far away from any population really blowed my mind.  You really need to drive to Strawberry. I think one of the owners told me three young hippies started it years ago but are now my age...I hope its still open .Not only motorcycles but go-carts, mopeds, anything old with wheels.

Patch, we live smack dab between those places and, you're right. Interesting stuff.

We used to live clear down on the border and had a cabin in Pine, just south of Strawberry. We took old 666 many times. And, that bicycle graveyard in Rye is just getting bigger, if you can believe it. 

That is a great place to go window shopping and maybe even buy a burl or two.

And, the trees that are now petrified here were growing in the triassic period. That's about 225 million years ago...give or take a month or two.

We're about 25 miles from the Petrified forest...as the crow flies. In visits there, I learned that this whole area was once a great inland sea. Fossilized sea shells and petrified wood shards litter the ground all around here. 

Thats a little more than 10,000 Gerald.....I believe your research is closer..

 

Gene we also got some sea shells at about 13,000 feet up on a mountain in Colo.

 

I sure hope things don't start happening that fast while we are alive.......
