September 5, 20178 yr Popular Post This is a good video, a bit long, that shows a huge tree being cut into 13 slabs. I've never seen one in operation and I had to admire the work effort this guy goes thru Edited December 5, 20178 yr by Ron Dudelston tags added
September 5, 20178 yr Surprised he didn't remove each slab to reduce the pressure on the blade. Bet his neighbors love the noise!
September 5, 20178 yr Matt has a whole series of videos on the sawmill build. Well worth the time to watch.
September 5, 20178 yr Cool video. Awesome mill. He put in a pretty good days work for sure cutting and handling those slabs. If he can find the right buyers for those slabs, he stands to make a tidy profit.

I have a lot of that equipment -- the hearing protector, the gloves, the little spray bottle, the bucket, a pickup truck, and the metric/english tape.
September 5, 20178 yr Author I was puzzled at him throwing water on them. Makes grain viewing great, but I don't think there is a way to prevent serious cracks as they dry. The slabs are so huge that handling them would be a major task.

A wedge at the entrance of the cut would go a long way. The log is being picked up where the houses are close together. Where he is sawing looks to be more open.

September 5, 20178 yr It is a little louder than a chain saw. But if he does it in midday not to bad for neighbors as the cuts go fairly quickly. Saw a mill working not quite this big but it was interesting to watch it cut. Hey on second look this is just like a giant bandsaw using electric motor, so not tooooo loud. The one I saw was a commercial model with gas engine. Edited September 5, 20178 yr by Gerald

September 5, 20178 yr Thanks for posting, good video. He should invest in a tractor with some forks on it to save his back. Young mans sport, the way he is manhandling the boards. He got some nice grain cutting them like he did. Kind of reminded me of Gilligan. Herb Edited September 5, 20178 yr by Dadio

Herb I thought the same Herb...and maybe the tailgate on his truck as he was pushing the log with it. Now that you mention it, he did look a bit like Gilligan Maybe it was the Professor and MaryAnn doing the video work

Not sure how big a log this place can handle.... Their "motor " has 4 wheels...
September 6, 20178 yr Looks like the BelSaw mill we had on the farm. It had a 48" diam. blade and a Jimmy 671 direct drive off a 2" shaft from the reduction gear on the motor. We used a Ford 9N tractor with a front end loader and forks to move the logs around. it would cut 22" logs X 21' long. Herb Edited September 7, 20178 yr by Dadio
