August 20, 20178 yr I'm making a jewelry case for my daughter in law with the black limba hardwood that I need to make knobs for. I thought I had some birch one from Rockler but couldn't find one. Do any of you have one you can take a photo of and provide some measurements? I need to make a 1" knob. Thanks for anyone out there that can help. August 20, 20178 yr I don't have any patterns but I made some for some boxes I made. You might get an idea from these The first two are made from welding rods and short dowels the third is wood shaped as hearts and the forth a lady in New Orleans ordered this one plus the pulls are from some bamboo wood flooring. I would suggest you might be happier with some if you thought up the designs yourself. I am a person who hates to be told anything.
August 20, 20178 yr Author I'm looking for the wooden knobs like you get from Rockler. MAN! THOUSE ARE GREAT KNOBS, but too elaborate for me.
August 20, 20178 yr How about this. Short pieces of dowels and a brass welding rod. You can't get more simple than these. My first boxes were just formed pieces of wood with small dowels to hold them out for fingers to get under. Nothing any more simple than that.
August 20, 20178 yr Just now, rlpeterson said: Yes Lew, that's what I'm looking for. Hang on a minute, I'm working up a Sketchup picture for you.
August 20, 20178 yr Author Lew, would you be able to send me the files? My email is rpeterro5@gmail.com. Thanks

Thanks Hey Ron, you might want to send Lew a PM with your email address and edit it out of this post. Just a suggestion for your personal security. Edit Add: You also can Right Click on each image and do a File>Save Image As to save each image as JPEG file at your designated location. However, understand if you're wanting the actual Sketch-up files too. Edited August 20, 20178 yr by Grandpadave52
August 20, 20178 yr I can't do a Sketch Up drawing but I'll try to explain my method of knob making. But, it only produces rectangular ones. Start with a piece of 1X2 over 1' in length. At the router table, fully round over one edge of the piece (with the 2" width down). Now chuck a 3/8 round nose bit in the router table. Raise it to cut about a half inch. You can do the cut in increments. Set the fence so that your cut is in the middle of the 2" side of the piece. Run both sides. Now, rip the piece about 1/8th inch below the groove made with the round nose. I use the TS but a band saw might be more comfortable. Take the full length to the drill press. Figure out how wide/long you want your pull to be. Mark both ends of your pull. Using a 3/8" Forstner, drill through the center of the groove, centering the Forstner's point on the length line. Do this for both ends of the pull. At the band saw, cross cut at your length lines. I use an oscillating belt sander to round over the ends to match the curvature of the round over. I also ease the edges of the Forstner cut hole. I just glue the knobs on but a screw might hold better. Though, I've never had one come off.
August 20, 20178 yr Home Depot has Shaker style knobs in Birch, in two different sizes, if I recall. I think one was 1" and the other was 1-1/4". It's been awhile since I bought them as I salvaged about a dozen from a "dumpster dive" chest and haven't needed any lately.
