Grab Bar Installation

Featured Replies

My brother suggested we purchase and install a grab bar for mom in her bathroom. At 88, she still gets around good, but something to get a hold of would be beneficial.

He bought it and I installed it. Teamwork. I let mom decide where she wanted it. After all, gotta keep the customer happy.

Now, sayin' all that, this is only the second grab bar I have ever installed. The other one is in our bath room and it was fairly easy since I installed it vertical with screws going directly into the stud. Mom's install was horizontal. I found one stud (the closest to whoever is sitting on the toilet), but had to install the other end in the hollow area in between two studs.

My brother bought the 18 inch stainless bar made by Moen. I went to the big blue box store and bought a matching Secure Clamp...and a diamond tipped 1 1/4 inch hole saw...and matching arbor. I can for see installing one or two more before all is said and done.

Actually, the install was much easier than I thought it would be. Last night, I watched several install videos on You Tube, so I was as prepared as I could be. And as you can see in the pics, I got-er-done! And it is level!

Note: I used a Diamond tipped 1 1/4 inch hole saw to drill the hole in the ceramic tile. Actually, it was easy. And I used a regular carbide tipped masonary bit to drill the three holes on the other end so I could drive in the screws.

Just in case you are curious, here are a couple of links to the products.

Nice work, Mike. I'm sure mom's grateful and, your family is relieved.

Nice Job!

Years ago, I put one in our tub/shower. The only way I could figure out how to do it was to put it on an angle so both ends hit on studs. Wish I knew about thse fasteners then!

Seeing your Mom's tile reminded me of our bathroom before the remodel

Great review and suggestions Mike! Thanks for the post. This is an install we all may likely will need to consider sooner or later.

Thanks for taking the time to post!

Thanks Mike. I didn't realize this installation was available. Definitely something I should consider!

I've probably installed 7 or 8 grab bars over the years, but I've never seen the install kit. Great idea!

John
