June 17, 20179 yr Popular Post Sure, don't want to see the ads, pay us instead of the advertisers paying us. Either way, we make our money, sucker! This is the chicken and the egg syndrome. Advertisers pay to advertise. In some cases that is what keeps the lights on. There is nothing wrong with this. The only other alternative is pay for the privilege of accessing and maintenance of the website. Either method is viable. However, when the advertisers or the website owners ignore the fact that without people's participation the website is a failure, it is doomed. Lately, there has been and is an attitude on the part of companies that have websites, such as similar ones to this one, that have forgotten that the membership is their customer instead of the other way around. The membership doesn't exist to make them money, the website exist to provide a service, that if done right provides an audience that become potential customers of their advertisers. The participants have the right to a functional, friendly place to socialize. John has done an excellent job of balancing that here. However, there are other sites that have become so overwhelmed with non-related advertisements, that it has fostered a small rebellion amongst the membership. It has forced several of the more knowledgeable members to stop contributing, and without their participation the site might eventually die a slow painful (and non-profitable) death.
