June 10, 20178 yr I was looking at a CL ad for a welder. The ad reads: "Miller syncrowave 200 ac/dc high frequency machine, will weld aluminum. Runs on 480 Volt Only. Single phase so it can be run off of a transformer powered by 220 household power. Uses only 2 legs of 480 3 phase." Is that possible (or true)?
June 10, 20178 yr Yes. 3 phase power is available as 3 phase 3 wire (delta) 480v, one of the phases is grounded so you have 480v between any two phases and 480v to ground. 3 phase 4 wire (Y) 277/480v has 480v between any of the phases but 277v to the grounded center point of the Y connected winding. These are the two most common types supplied by a utility. 480v is a very dangerous voltage as it will ionize the air when it faults and normally has the amperage available to cause a lot of damage and flash burns. Don't consider buying this one. Roly I am not sure but I do not think 480v is permitted in a residence. Edited June 10, 20178 yr by Roly

June 10, 20178 yr Author Thanks Roly. It wasn't on my "buy" list, I had just never seen an electrical set up like that.
