Sitting here watching "Ask This Old House" in Hawaii and they visit a "woodworker."   He's building a keepsake box and he first sands 200-2000 grit, then puts a few dollops of Gorilla Glue on and rubs it in.  Lets it dry, re-sands with 1200, and puts on a furniture wax.  

 

Adventurous I am, and it looks nice (at least initially), but I think I'll pass on this.
