May 12, 20179 yr comment_109297 WANNA BUILD 12' LEAN TO ON A 2 CAR GARAGE WHERE OVERHEAD DOOR IS. BRICK GABLE UP OVER DOOR. 'IGHT, HOW CAN I MOUNT/ATTACH 16' 2X8 ONTO THE BRICK GABLE & NOT CREATE A ?DISASTERATE? CANNOT GIT TO INSIDE OF GABLE, IF IT CAN BE ATTACHED, WILL HAVE TO BE ON OUTSIDE. WHY 2X8, TO NAIL METAL ''RAFTER HOLDER'' THINGS TO/ON FOR ENDS OF 2X6 RAFTERS. RUINED GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP WITH THIS! SURE HOPE I GET SOME REALLY ?SENCIABLE? IDEAS. I'M STUMPED & SLEEPY. LATER & THANKS. May 12, 20179 yr comment_109304 I would imagine there is a small "finger space" between the back of the bricks and the wall sheathing of the gable. The space is going to create a problem with fasteners such as bolts/lag bolts. Lack of access really makes this a stumper. Report
May 12, 20179 yr comment_109306 Should not be much different than putting up a ledger strip for a deck, should it? Are there studs behind the brick that you could hit with structural screws or lag bolts? Gap is a good idea so moisture can escape, as the brick above will get wet and it will wick down. Also some sort of flashing like around a chimney. Report
May 13, 20179 yr Author comment_109359 THINKING A 4X4 W/2X6 NAILED THE LENGTH, TO KEEP IT STRAIGHT, FROM CC FLOOR UP TO ENDS OF 2X8 FOR SUPPORT, MAYBE ONE IN MIDDLE. FRAME OF LEAN TO SHOULD HOLD 4X4'S IN PLACE THUS 2X8. MAKE SURE EVERTHING IS SNUG FORE NAILING ROOFING METAL ON SIDES. 2X6 RAFTERS WOULD BE LAST THING NAILED ON FORE METAL ROOF INSTALLED. SUGGESTING S 'PRECIATED ON THIS WILD HAIR. Report
May 13, 20179 yr comment_109368 How about putting the 4 x 4 down in concrete and then tie the roof into the old one. Report
May 13, 20179 yr comment_109403 Seems the problem is using the existing structure to support the new. Why not put in four posts and corner braces to make the new structure stand-alone, but just next to existing? Around here, attaching the new to old requires permit; stand-alone (if small enough) doesn't need permit, unless it's got MPE services in it. Report
May 13, 20179 yr Author comment_109419 THANKS FELLOWS, EXESTING CC FLOOR. MAY DRILL THRU 4X4 & LOWER PART OF BRICK WALL INTO INSIDE OF GARAGE & BOLT IT TO BRICK WALL. GOT TO GO. COME ON. Report
May 13, 20179 yr comment_109461 10 hours ago, PeteM said: MPE services ??? What's that? http://www.acronymfinder.com/MPE.html Report
May 14, 20179 yr comment_109465 oops, sorry: MPE = mechanical, plumbing, electrical. In general if these services/trades are involved in new construction of any size/shape, they're more likely to trigger building permit requirements. You'll note they're also more likely to kill occupants! Cities have been sued (and lost) too often to let these items just slide by. Report
