water borne finish techniques

Featured Replies

From Family Handyman magazine.

I've used a lot of them and is what I used when I professionally refinished.  I never "pre-raised the grain" but preferred to "bury the grain" by applying the first coat, then sanding off the fuzzies.   And I normally sprayed, where my motto was, "Spray and go away."  It looks terrible when it first lays down, but settles down and flows out in a few minutes.

I used w/b stain that dry very fast and i always put them on heavy and wiped off soon.

Just a new learning curve, but one we'll all probably have to face, sooner or later, w/b is coming.

True, that. But at least the new waterbornes are leaps and bounds better than the ones available just 10 years ago or so. the first one I ever used was Crystalac and it had a very "cool" look on lighter woods, almost a light blue...it was awful. Today they are more durable and most of them at least got to "water clear" or tinted to mimic the oil based versions. Now if they could just get them to coalesce at lower temps.

I had my first experience with water borne lacquer in the 1980's, after several disastrous experiences I went back to nitro cellulose and swore never to try another water borne finish. Finally, just a few years ago a friend on the WOOD forum recommended the water borne lacquer from Target coatings. Expecting nothing I tried it. After having sprayed a few gallon of it, I like it very much and it is my finish of choice now.

Yes, Version 1.0 were quite awful.   They've gotten much better.
